Public Trust: Judge Sonia Sotomayor has record negative ratings, and the popularity of the president himself is declining. Americans seem to be getting tired of being looked in the eye and told tall tales.
The latest Gallup poll, asking "Would you like to see the Senate vote in favor of Sotomayor serving on the Supreme Court, or not?" found 55% of the public favoring her confirmation, but a high 36% opposing her.
By comparison, four years ago Gallup found 60% of the public favoring President Bush's nomination of John Roberts. Only 26% opposed Roberts, now chief justice of the United States. Only 9% of Gallup respondents held no opinion of Sotomayor after completion of her Senate testimony the lowest seen for any nominee.
As the polling firm noted, "opposition has grown as the percentage with no opinion has dropped by half" and the "eight-percentage-point increase in opposition to her serving on the Supreme Court is on the high side when compared with other recent nominees, thus producing the relatively high level of opposition measured in the most recent survey."
Rasmussen pollsters asked a more nuanced question: "Based upon what you know at this time, should the United States confirm Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court Justice?"
