I would have to disagree. There was a report of a break in. The cop doesn’t know the professor from Adam. Who’s to say there isn’t something going on behind the front door such as burglars holding the prof’s family with guns drawn or whatever. The cop merely looks at some ID and leaves and then is called back a few hours later because the family had been killed. No, the cop did his job. Gates and Hussein should apologize.

I’m not a cop booster, but when an officer responds to a situation like this, he needs to get the person, even if he IS the homeowner, out and into a safe area and verify that the person is not being held hostage, etc.

If Gates had, in fact, been a criminal and not the tenant, I’m sure it would not be the first time that the perp tried to back off a cop with accusations of racism and profiling.

Last I heard, the lowest he has been in the Rasmussen polling of those who strongly approve vs. strongly disapprove has been -7 in favor of the strongly disapprove. I haven’t seen the polling in the last few days though but he may hovering around that number today.

You know, we all try to "put ourselves in the situation" and predict how we would react. For me, I have to say if one of my neighbors saw me breaking a the front door on my house they might come over and commiserate (and one even has the key, to walk the dog when we go out of town) but not a one would call th police. We all know each other and look out for each other. It strikes me that this is really where Gates has made his mistake and hence all that follows really falls on him. If his neighbors knew who he was the phone call to the cops wouldn't ave been made. This elitist "Harvard professor" is more than likely so loaded up with reverse racism he can't stoop to introducing himself to his neighbors or making friends with them. The entire thing is his own fault IMHO.

well, I do see your point: interesting conflict between “my home is my castle” and “you may have a burglar in there.”

The “racism” hollering certainly did not help - and for King Obama and his prof buddy to boil it down to that is consciously counter-productive. Look for Jesse Jackson down there soon - no wait, he is jealous of Obama. Maybe Sharpton.

I am not taking up for the prof’s hollering a much-abused accusation, just trying to think what I would have done if a cop accused me of breaking into my own house. I hope I would have stayed level-headed.
