Some see the current economic downturn as tough — but temporary — times to be endured. But others see it as a harbinger of even grimmer days ahead. So they’re preparing for the worst by stockpiling food: piles and piles and piles of it.
Call them “suburban survivalists,” or call them, well, a little goofy. But they’re dead serious about being ready for a big crash … by making sure they have a nice little nosh in case of a catastrophe. Across the country, there are people preparing for the possibility that we will not have access to food by ensuring that their cupboards, at least, will be far from bare.
Postapocalyptic Pathmark Take Bill Cole, a dad and doctor who runs a successful chiropractic office. He seems like the guy next door … which is where you may have to go to politely borrow a cup (or a barrel) of sugar should a fatal financial meltdown occur.
Cole has turned his home in the suburbs of Pittsburgh into a virtual postapocalyptic Pathmark. “I’ve got enough to last two years for me and my immediate family,” he says. His stockpile is filled with foods that can stand the test of time — from peanuts to pancake mix, canned peaches to peas.

If we do indeed meltdown to that degree, printed script will not be trusted again until it is backed with gold and silver.
Governments are starting to take a little more interest in tracking purchasers of bullion. You can gauge how things are going by how soon and how much that interest escalates. When the government demands to know who is holding, and how much, you will know we are close to the tipping point.
And if Hussein et al do a FDR and make private ownership of gold and silver illegal, we are there my friends.
One thing I have not seen much emphasis on is medications for serious conditions. Screw your insurer and their 30 day rules. If you (like me) need a medication you can't live without, you'd better start stockpiling it. I bought a one year supply (legal prescription limit) and the pharmacist said they couldn't turn it into insurance. I told her I didn't care. I told the other pharmacist I was stockpiling it and he said "smart move".

I had not heard about this before, but apparently EO 10998 was revoked by the subsequent Executive Order 11490.

my problem is organizing my downstairs pantry to accomodate all of it....it'll be a fun job....
and trying to buy something with gold?.....well...you won't get nearly enough to cover the cost of any gold bought in the last year or two....IMO
keep your coinage handy ..in a crisis, the banks might declare a “holiday” and your safe deposit box may not open for many months...maybe years....
(1) Minerals development. Develop programs and encourage the exploration, development, and mining of strategic and critical minerals for emergency purposes.
(2) Production. Provide guidance and leadership to assigned industries in the development of plans and programs to insure the continuity of production in the event of an attack, and cooperate with the Department of Commerce in the identification and evaluation of essential facilities.
(3) Water. Develop plans with respect to water, including plans for the treatment and disposal, after use, of water after its withdrawal into a community system or an emergency system for treatment, storage, and distribution for public use. In developing any plans relating to water for use on farms and in food facilities, assure that those plans are in consonance with plans and programs of the Department of Agriculture.
(4) Electric power and natural gas. In preparedness planning for electric power and natural gas, the Federal Power Commission shall assist the Secretary of the Interior as set forth in Section 1901 of this order.
Nothin' quite like those "enumerated powers," eh? Looks like I'm going to have to chase this monster all the way through the revision history. Something tells me however, that none of these EOs reduce Federal power to confiscate private food stocks in an emergency.
He could be planning on making sure he gets to Utah in one piece. Any ammo left over could be used for trade, supplies, etc.
