Of the several ramshackle zoos in Gaza, Marah, located not far from the Bureij refugee camp, is by far the cheeriest: The animals are lively, the enclosures clean, and children gather around the cage of a resting lion.

The Gaza zookeepers get an A for effort. Much like the Kabul zookeeper who amazingly managed to keep Marjan the lion alive and fairly decently fed through a series of wars (including having a grenade lobbed at him by Russian soldiers, taking out his eye), and enabled Marjan to give cheer and hope to many thousands of Afghans, before dying with dignity in his sleep of old age.
Marjan was a noble old beast. There’s a special place in heaven for wartime zookeepers who stay with their charges.
Yes, both Marjan and the Zookeeper were noble creatures. The lengths that zookeeper went to in order to obtain a steady meat supply for Marjan were impressive. He managed to convince some of the very few people who were in a position to supply it, that Marjan was worth it.
Pretty damn impressive.
