meanwhile food production in Venezuela has plummeted since they began ripping up large farms and ranches and cutting them up for poor itinerant peasant farmers.....

Expect a war in South America. That tin horn dictator is not buying tanks for nothing. He’s sure not going to use them to decorate his Christmas Tree.

The Colombia army does not have tanks at all, the closest they get is the EE-9 Cascavel armoured car:
IFV / APC
EE-9 Cascavel - 130
M-113 - 120
EE-11 Urutu - 100
RG-31 Nyala - 4
HMMWV - 400+[citation needed]
M8 Greyhound - 5

Main battle tanks are not especially useful in that part of the world, unless (as already pointed out) you want to put down an urban insurrection. The Colombians are well provided with anti-tank weapons, but their battle-hardened troops could probably take the Chavez rabble's armor apart with bolt-cutters if it came to that.

The country once exported coffee beans by the ton. Now it must import coffee...

It’s not just coffee. Their govt has seized vast acreage of efficient farms and divided them into tiny peasant tracts for people with no experience, knowledge or equipment or money to do any farming.

I don’t know what they expected. This is exactly what was going to happen no matter what. Shortages.

They’ll need more than tanks, the support element is huge. Where is the tank terrain outside of the urban area??

Exactly like Zimbabwe without the racial aspect, its the opposition he is taking things away from for the “common good”... wait that sounds like something Hillary once said.

I really don’t understand your post. Who did I suggest might “need” tanks? I spelled out the opposite in reference to the Colombian army in fact.

Chavez should be able to cut a good deal with the Rooskies:

Rooskie tank force reductions or statistical juggling

"At present the Russian Army has about 22,000 tanks, including more than 15,000 at storehouses. This makes up for just over 6,000 combat-ready tanks. Permanent readiness units have between 1,000 and 1,500 tanks."

A tank is a formidable weapon against a civilian population or an enemy that does not have sophisticated antitank weapons. A tank is a very expensive metal coffin if your enemy has tow guided antitank weapons, and or laser guided munitions dropped from aircraft or a few spare A-10s to put in the air.

It’s an updated T-72, pretty much useless against the invading American imperialist pigs as the Gulf War showed. So it’s for internal suppression, lending to friendly countries like Honduras (before the ousting of that dictator wanna-be) for some marxist muscle, or simply taking them over

Where is the tank terrain outside of the urban area??

The Northwest Border of Venezuela(La Guajira) is mostly open semi arid moderately flat country. However, the Andes mountains are between that area and any major population centers of Columbia. For Venezuela to go to war with Columbia would be fools mission. Also, western Venezuela is very anti Chavez. He would have a resistance movement in his own country aided by Columbia if he attacks Columbia.
