Thanks for posting. I like Brian Lamb but he has a method of bouncing around with questions while interviewing that absolutely drives me crazy. Here is an example:

By his own account, Gates was a "mama's boy." He was fascinated with the complexity of the woman who was enraptured with the radical anti-white oratory of Malcolm X but at the same time wanted her sons to live and excel in an integrated world. In 1962, at the age of 46, Pauline Gates went through a severe menopause that threw off her hormonal balance. In Gates's words, "she became another person." She was diagnosed with clinical depression and hospitalized. Gates recounts in a Booknotes interview with Brian Lamb:

Before they took her off she hugged me and she said, 'Look, I'm going to die, and I want you to love your father and be good,' you know, all that stuff. And I cried, of course, hysterically. Then I went upstairs and I prayed that God would bring my mama back, and if he did, I would give my life to Christ."

Thank you for posting this link. I found the interview fascinating, especially in light of his more recent work. I have kept very quiet about Professor Gates and haven’t posted yet about him, but want to say a couple of things.

In the last few years I have followed his African American Lives series one and two with great interest, especially since genealogy is my passion. I learned quite a bit about him in the programs, and saw how absolutely astonished he himself was to find some of the family stories he grew up with were unfounded. He also discovered he was 50% white and 50% black—and was especially surprised to find he had maternal white blood.

I honestly believe that this whole incident has taken on a life of its own. He was jet lagged. He was tired. He probably wasn’t thinking too clearly, and he probably popped his mouth off. My disappointment, if this is what happened, is that he has continued to call the policeman racist, and this spread to his daughter. That’s where I’ve really lost respect for him.

I will await further developments, though, and not call him names. I do hope that the audio of whatever the police have is released, and I hope that some good will come from all of this.

I do look at him differently now than last week, but hope that we will have more clarity on what happened in the future.

As to our President...I am really disappointed in him.

At Yale, his interest in Africa deepened. Since the age of 10, he had obsessively studied African geography, memorizing the names of the "presidents, leaders, and petty dictators" of the emerging African countries of the early 1960s. At the same time, black kids were joking about "Ubangi lips"—and, as he puts it, "big-d*** motherf***ers" who would "swing in trees and shit, living in grass huts." All the kids watched Ramar of the Jungle on TV every Saturday morning. I have come to the conclusion that Blacks HATE everyone of every race except themselves. They just HATE, it must be a gene. They are angry at everything and everybody, even their own.

Your welcome. I had heard about the esteemed professor, but when I started digging I was kind of shocked to read the things that he had been quoted as saying. He sure seems to be carrying around a lot of racial baggage. IMO.

And most of these white women end up abandoned with little children who will never know their father. Obama struggles with that one mightily. Double whammy for him - his Mom ditched him back in Hawaii to live with the Grandparents rather than let him stay with her and grow up in the streets of Jakarta. I still have money on someone else fathering Obama - Uncle Frank, Malcom X - who knows. Maybe both Gates & Obama had Mamas who loved the X-man.
