Does Michael Vick Deserve a Second Chance?
Pajamas Media ^ | July 30 | Rick Moran

Posted on 07/30/2009 10:28:55 AM PDT by AJKauf

There's Michael Vick, former starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, cruel torturer of helpless animals, and sometime promoter of dogfights. Vick personifies the modern comeback story in sports. His horrific acts of barbaric cruelty visited upon dogs in his kennel, as well as his part ownership of a statewide ring of dogfighting venues, led to his conviction in 2007 on several counts of participating in illegal dogfighting activities and supplying money for the gambling operation. He was sentenced to 23 months and was released in May of this year.

After his arrest, Vick held what has become the obligatory mea culpa news conference for pro athletes who have been caught up in legal trouble. He apologized to everyone and promised to reform. A few months later while out on bail, he failed a drug test for marijuana, which even his supporters were forced to admit was a strange way to reform himself. Released by his team, he finds himself currently without an NFL home — although that is expected to change in the next few weeks.

None of us are granted the insight to look into a man’s soul and discover if he truly is remorseful and willing to change his ways. All we can do is judge someone based on our ability to interpret a person’s attitude toward their transgression and how they carry themselves from that point on....

Some people may find dog fighting repugnant, but should a man have lost his livelihood and freedom over it?

Yes, it’s been outlawed forever, and what he did was worse than dog fighting. He killed them with his own hands for fun.

That said, he should be allowed to work, then individuals can decide if they want to support him by watching or supporting the team he’s on. I won’t... But he did the time... If the a team thinks his ability outweighs the PR hit, go for it. Most fans won’t care. At least if he is winning....

dogs were killed and he made a tidy profit off it.

for those saying he should be Ok to play then should a child molestor or rapist be allowed to play again and make a fortune because some football fans like to watch him play?

The answer is no

When it comes to politics, money, and sports we can really be a nation of whores. Is there anything we value that is not for sale?

“A man’s character is his fate.”
—Heraclitus

People seldom alter their fundamental character. Every foul impulse that drove Vicks acts of cruelty - and his savoring of those acts - is still there.

I recommend trial by ordeal to answer that question. Place him in a pit with eight linebackers. If he manages to subdue them all and crawl out of the pit, I say give him a second chance. If not, then no way.

What would you say to a child who asked you if someone makes a mistake in his life, can he redeem himself?

Yes.

As long as Lawrence Taylor is in the Hall of Fame, the NFL has no leg to stand on when it comes to drug abuse among it’s athletes.

I’d say yes. If Vick isn’t allowed a chance to demonstrate that he has rehabilitated himself, then the entire concept of prison being any kind of “correctional” facility is pointless.

What he did will be hung around his neck forever. But as long as he continues to at least play the part of a “reformed citizen”, then he should be treated like one.

On the other hand, no warnings — any violations should result in the reinstatement of the ban.

I think Oakland might be the only team that could possibly use him without the fans revolting.

That doesn't mean he is entitled to get millions and represent the NFL.

I like Dennis Miller's thoughts on this.

Yes, he deserves a second chance.

It's the just that the imagine of Michael Vick picking up a dog and slamming it on the ground and beating it bloody, then picking it up again and repeatedly slamming it into the ground until it's brain poured out will likely be a "hard sell" to the public.
