WALSENBURG, Colo.-Don't tell Dorothy J. Tenorio that Washington is nearing a deal to improve her health care.
A former grocery clerk, Tenorio's been scraping by on disability benefits for more than a decade. The 60-year-old, and many of her neighbors, are skeptical health care overhauls pending in Congress will change much in Colorado's rural San Juan Valley.
"I would tell Congress, they need to get out here to Huerfano County and see how bad it is, see what we're living with," said Tenorio, who suffered a neck injury in 1979 and hasn't worked since 1996.
In rural America, many like Tenorio are too poor to afford basic care.(continued)

Did Congress abolish Medicaid last night while I was asleep? Instead of "do it for the children" now we'll hear "do it for the hillbillies", I suppose.
It's a 4 page article, btw.
I’m glad they are skeptical.
The fact that farmers and rural Americans are hurting had to do with the fact that they voted for Obama.
Here in rural Alabama they all KNOW its a scam.
I did not realize this was accepted fact about obubers death care plan. It must be because abc says so. I guess I must have missed it like I did global warming.
“Bitter clingers” and all that. BTW, if I’m unable to get to the VA Medical Center, a van from the DAV or other veterans organization will come pick me up and take me, free of charge. With all these trillions spent in stimulus money, are you telling me that one of Mr. Obama’s people haven’t set up something similar for Medicaid patients? Look at all the Chrysler and GM vans it would take....
I think you’re right.
And now in this article (and this am on CNN, yes I was flipping channels in the gym....), they’re talking about eyes and teeth! I’ve NEVER had eye insurance. I’ve never had great dental insurance although we do have some now, have always paid through the nose for care, even when in school -— and now they’ll be tossing this in there too for “free”? Or what??
I did hear a guy on CNN saying that it wouldn’t cost anything for the govt to allow doctors to cross state lines, and that that would help rural areas have the care they need for teeth, eyes, and bodies — because there are enough who would volunteer in the poorer areas if they could. So that sounded like a good solution (bwdik). Which must mean it will never be implemented....
something similar for Medicaid patients?
ambulance transportation bills are paid.....we see articles about it regularly
Mrs. 2ndDivisionVet is the manager of an optical shop in a Sears store. Her parent company, Luxottica (Sears Optical, Lenscrafters, Target Optical, Pearle, RayBan, EyeMed, etc., etc.) have Vision Vans that travel the United States making free eyeglasses for schoolkids, seniors, rural communities, etc. They also take in millions of used eyeglasses and send them overseas with well-qualified volunteer teams to fit those glasses to poor people that need them. For many, these are the first eyeglasses they’ll ever own. Must be those “evil capitalists” that Mr. Obama and Speaker Pelosi are always going on about.
Waitjustaminutehere: I may not be the only one who noticed something wrong with this story, but I do want to point out the part that I think is most questionable. The story states that this 60 year old woman with a neck injury hasn’t worked since 1996. She was 47 years old in 1996, and, even with a “neck injury,” she couldn’t do any kind of office work, bookkeeping, store greeting, security dispatch, transcribing, telemarketing, or similar work? Really? What kind of neck injury was this?
My elderly parents are terrified of the euthanasia clause. No one wants a government worker to come to their house and decide how they will be put to death. This is like a nightmare. Shame on you Obama!
Yeah, the rural folks whining in this article should consider themselves lucky. At least they are far enough away from the Obama Youth, they could hide.... Unlike the rest of us.
First they’ll come for my parents, then they’ll come for me. Since I have no kids to protect me, and my cats aren’t trained to be attack kitties... I’ll be outa luck -— should I hit the leftist eugenics age or get sick.
That’s fantastic! I have heard about programs like that, plus seen tv specials about them.
Have you no means of protection?
Farmers and rural Americans voted for oObama?
Yes, that is what the guest on the show is trying to lobby for apparently....
LOL, yeah.... but I guess I’m picturing a really bad scenario. As a first-generation American whose parents escaped from Communism once, it’s not that easy after the round-ups start.... :(
And I do not think it is just Rural America. It is almost all America.
Iowa voted for Obama, only 3 cities over 100,000. We are very rural.........But as for me, Hell No to the Bambster!
His day are numbered. 5-4-3-2-1 Bye Bye SOBO!
“What kind of neck injury was this?”
Regardless of whether it’s legitimate, if this woman is drawing disability benefits, she is Medicare-eligible and presumably relies on Medicare to pay the bills.
But as the article itself states: “Those covered by Medicare or Medicaid aren’t always better off. Because federal reimbursement rates are routinely tied to volume, rural doctors are paid less for the same services and as a result sometimes won’t treat those patients.”
Thus, her rant should be taken for what it is: the bitter complaining of someone already on public insurance! Not exactly a vote of confidence for extending a Medicare-style plan to up to 80+ million Americans, as the House bill would do (http://blog.heritage.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/mhlewing-froup.doc)
I thought he said something about being allowed to cross state lines, if they are certified in one state?
This is the guy they were interviewing about it:
http://www.ramusa.org/about/stanbrock.htm
I scanned the Web site and didn’t see the specifics about what he said, maybe it’s there somewhere. Or on CNN...
fyi anyway...
