As an experiment a friend of mine sat inside his truck in a Wal-Mart parking lot and took stats on the number of people that were entering the store: he was particularly interested in the group designated as morbidly obese. His was a random sample lasting 30 minutes. The following week on the same day at the same time, he waited in the parking lot of the largest health food store in the area and wanted to garner stats on the same class of obese people.

His conclusion? -- Not truly scientific, as the people he was observing never knew they were being observed, and no one stood on the scales for him -- but the morbidly obese group is pretty obvious. He found that on this day he estimated 28% were morbidly obese in Wal-Mart; 45% obese; 10% overweight. The health food store was quite different, during the same time scale 0% were obese, and approx. 23% were simply overweight.

What is ironic is Roman gladiators were fat by todays standards. They were not the lean Decimus Maximus played by Russell Crowe. They were referred to as “hordearii” (barley men). Their diet was essentially high carbohydrate vegetarian (barley and vegetables) so as to bulk up for arena combat.
