Murphy hears it from both sides of issue ("not a town hall meeting")
Bucks County Courier Times ^ | 8/2/09 | ANDY VINEBERG

At two public events on Saturday, the hot topic was health care reform.

The plan was for Congressman Patrick Murphy to discuss health care reform and other hot-button topics with his constituents on a one-on-one basis.

The plan didn't last long.

Minutes into the first of two scheduled "Congressman on Your Corner" sessions Saturday afternoon at the jam-packed Concerto Fusion restaurant in Morrisville, shouts from an impatient, frustrated crowd forced Murphy and his staff to reconsider the format of the event.

"You're concerned about the format. We've changed the format," Larry Glick, Murphy's director of outreach, told the crowd. "The congressman will talk to you as a group."

Murphy's about-face (in his opening remarks, he specifically told a woman "this was not a town hall meeting") resulted in a 90-plus-minute, frequently contentious Q&A session with voters clearly emotional about health care. But the congressman kept his cool, listening to people's concerns and defending his plans while occasionally asking hecklers "to be respectful."

The revised format was repeated later in the day in front of the produce department at the Acme in Levittown. Emotions ran high at the second gathering as well, although the crowd seemed more evenly divided politically at the supermarket than the restaurant.

The meetings were the 78th and 79th "Congressman on Your Corner" events of Murphy's two-and-a-half years in office.

"The great thing about Bucks County is that people really can be very passionate," Murphy said as he left Acme. "So that's why I don't flinch and give them their chance to talk while most of my colleagues are putting their heads in the sand."

Of the change in format, Murphy said, "We called an audible. Driving over (to Morrisville), I was told there were 25 people there. When we showed up, there were about 150."

The thiefs in Congress KNOW what's in store for them this month. My US Rep is holding "telephone town hall meetings". I will be calling there to ask why. We need to keep up the pressure on this.

I will be adding the keyword "townhallmeeting" to any thread I see regarding town hall meetings attended by angry constituents.

With any luck, they'll start fearing for their lives if they go against the will of the people.

just called my rep, Chris Smith (New Jersey) and neither his local office nor his DC office could tell me what his schedule of public appearances is for the summer recess. I’m going to stay on top of them and I hope everyone does.

I know the hangings are done after the trials but what format are the trials for treason, can we try them all at once so we can get it over fast?

Patrick Murphy, unfortunately, is my congressman. He is a weasel who talks out of both sides of his mouth. He is as dumb as a rock and is only interested in a career in politics. He will say anything to anyone just to make them happy. He is EXACTLY what is wrong with Congress. Proof? He voted for GWB in 2000 and Obama in 2008. He sensed a change in the wind and went with it for HIS benefit. He has no core beliefs. He has no character. He is a worthless turd. Outside of that he is a great guy.

Heard him on the Imus show once and he had an almost childlike way of speaking. Not very impressive. Yet he is an Iraq war veteran? Hard to believe.

Of course the American people put this lousy congress in place. What did they expect??

Isn't that really the ONLY thing the House and senate have to fear? Seriously. What else is there, re-election? They don't really care about that as they've already bought their influence and of course they'll have gov health insurance for life. What's to fear?

This kid Murphy originally won his Bucks County seat in 2006 without even winning Bucks County. He squeaked in thanks to government-addicted slivers of Philly and Montgomery County which are gerrymandered into the district. In 2008 he was re-elected on Ubama’s coattails.

I have a feeling voters from Central and Upper Bucks County will be out in force in 2010. Hopefully, there will be enough of them to overcome the heavy Democrat base of parasites that dominate the lower half of the district. If these upper county voters come out in force, Murphy is done.

Of course, the GOP needs to put up a decent candidate. Personally, I hope it’s Tom Manion again.

I'm in this poseur's district too. Where does he publicize these "corner" events? He has an office in Doylestown but we never see him around here. He sticks to the lower end of Bucks where more of the voters re Democrats, I guess. I would like to follow him around during the recess but I can't find out where he is going to be.

I wrote to the schmuck two weeks ago about this health care abomination and he hasn't written me back yet.

Wow, read some of the comments left on that article. Gives me hope that we can throw this bastard out next year and get a real Congressman who won’t be a Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist dummy for Nancy Pelosi.

Post #9 has it exactly right. Murphy is first and foremost out for Murphy. He is a political animal and intends to make politics a lifelong career. He will blow whichever way the wind blows. He will not lead.

By the way, you can count on the Courier and the Intelligencer to do everything in their power to get Murphy re-elected.
