Iranian dissidents blow up bridge in protest at President Ahmadinejad's second term

By Con Coughlin : August 3rd, 2009

As Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is sworn in for his second term in office today, Iranian opposition groups have intensified their attacks against the regime in protest at the controversial election result.

In the latest incident, a leading opposition group is being blamed for blowing up a key railway bridge at Ahwaz in southern Iran. The bridge, which is used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to transport military supplies, was destroyed in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to reports now reaching the West, Iranian security officials immediately sealed off the area to prevent onlookers seeing the extent of the damage.

A leading Iranian dissident group called the Abu Bakr forces is being blamed for the attack, which has severely disrupted one of the country’s main freight rail links with Bandar Imam Khomeini sea port.

The attack was timed to coincide with the Islamic regime’s decision to put on trial hundreds of anti-government protesters at the weekend as part of the government’s continuing efforts to suppress all opposition to Mr Ahmadinejad’s re-election in June.

Although many Iranians believe the election result was rigged, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader, has accepted the result which means his favoured candidate will now serve a second term in office.

Sure hope Obama does not interfere with their internal affairs by saying something mis-calibrated.

Now it gets interesting.
The revolutionary cycle gets going in ernest.
It’s not easy to blow a rail bridge, someone
had to know what they were doing.

The report I saw last, said one of the support pillars was damaged - which would still probably make the bridge unusable, but not exactly blown up.

If you want to bring down the Iranian regime, then damage their ability to export oil. Without the money they need to buy the support of the rural poor (from whom they recruit the Basiji) the regime will fall.

Iran Azadi! Good show!

Just FYI, it's amazing bow many Iraqis are watching this and supporting the true freedom fighters.

They say proudly, "They see what we now have in Iraq. They want this. And we want them to have this freedom."

The media won't report this,it it is a prevailing sentiment expressed around Baghdad.
