Will Russia Drill Off Florida's Coast?

Energy: As Russian attack submarines patrol our eastern seaboard, Moscow signs a deal to help Castro's Cuba drill for oil off the Florida coast. In Moscow and Havana, the cry is "Drill, Comrade, Drill!"

Two Russian nuclear attack submarines have taken up positions along our East Coast in recent days, another sign of renewed assertiveness by the former communist giant. The move comes as Moscow inks a deal with the communist relic of Cuba to drill for oil we refuse to go after.

The submarines are of the Akula class, a counterpart to the Los Angeles class attack subs of the U.S. Navy. "I don't think they've put two first-line nuclear subs off the U.S. coast in about 15 years," said Norman Polmar, a naval historian and submarine warfare expert.

The subs' appearance may be more symbolic than a real threat. More interesting, perhaps, are the four contracts Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin signed in Havana during his recent visit there.

They allow Russia's Zarubezhneft oil concern to work with the Cubanpetroleo monopoly to explore and develop the oil riches of the North Cuban Basin off Florida.

Havana imports more than half its oil, mostly at a subsidized price from Hugo Chavez's Venezuela. Cuba's domestic output is exclusively heavy oil with a high sulfur content. Its offshore Gulf waters could contain large quantities of lighter, sweet crude.

Drilling will be done off America's coast soon enough. But thanks to a treaty signed by President Carter, the new oil and gas resources that will be discovered in the region will be discovered by Russia and Cuba to their economic benefit.

My mistake. I still see the Russians doing everything they can to take as much oil as they can from as close to the Keys as they can.

If we’re not going to bother to drill, the I say, “Drill Russia, Drill.

Russia, and the world, knows that we have an incompetent coward at the helm.

What’s to stop them? What would Obama do, send out ACORN to start riots? Organize a few communities, perhaps appoint a few more czars?

Heck, this guy is so weak that he can’t even show his real birth certificate and is too embarrassed of his grades, he refuses to reveal his college records. He’s got one thing going for him, only one... he’s black. Big deal, the Russians aren’t going to give a hoot.

Perhaps he will make “demands”, like he has done to Israel..... those have sure been good for a few laughs.

Frankly, I hope they drill and spill that crap all over our beaches, perhaps then we can collect the damn stuff.

Remember, none of this matters, we are all going to be driving cars that haven’t been invented yet, using fuel that hasn’t even been discovered yet and we’re going to pay for all of this crap with the money that belongs to folks that haven’t even been born yet.

Heck, I’m rooting for the Russians. They would like us to fail, but Obama is making sure that we will.

I’m not surprised that Putin has no fear of our boney-ass house negro president.

If Reagan was alive and still in office, Putin would be poopin’ his pants.

The Russian navy will send two subs like this one. K-152 Nerpa. Looks like Putin and Oilprom want a deal with Castro and Cubanpetroleo.

Well, the US doesn’t seem to want to, so it might as well be Cuba. Idiot politicians, including that squishy governor Crist in Florida seem to be more concerned with attendance at Disney than anything significant.

Stealing America’s oil. I hope the Russians (like the movie) come ashore and grab Charlie Crist, Bill Nelson and Mel Martinez. Take em back to Russia.

Exactly. Where’s the US Navy in all of this? Don’t we have subs to defend our waters anymore?

We need oil to fuel our economy, and the kenyan is sitting around crying about his cert and how Republicans are destroying his health “care” plan.

If Obama lets them. And my bet is he will. It’ll be fun watching his toadie Gibbs explain that away.

Plus...given the proximity of The North Cuba basin to the coast of Cuba...I'm not sure there is anything the US can do about this.

That is, of course, if the oil actually lies beneath the North Cuba Basin. Therein lies the rub.

Extended reach directional drilling technology is about 8 miles. BP set the last record in Africa I believe.

BP also just completed moving the massive Liberty Rig by barge to the North Slope. The well for the Liberty field will set new records slightly more than 8 miles.

Funny how the leftmedia, in its incessant whining about drilling for oil off of Florida's shores, never mention these actions by China, and now Russia.

Amicus Hostis, plain and simple.

Maybe the concern is not so much an oil spill...

Nothing new thaer. obama told the world, or better yet, what Americans could/would not do if they elected him President. He was elected, I would argue not by Americans, but was elected. So one must deduce they wanted what he was going to impose on them.

I do not like it, even a little bit, that they inflicted him on me. But that is the way it goes.
