Missouri's senior U.S. Senator is among a small group of Republican Senators announcing the decision to vote in favor of the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond says that while he respects his fellow Republicans who oppose the nomination, he hopes his vote bodes well for a future with less polarization and less confrontation.
Bond points to his support for President Bill Clinton's two High Court nominees - Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer.
"I supported these nominees of a Democratic President as did 86 of my colleagues for Justice Breyer and 95 of my colleagues for Justice Ginsburg," said Bond during a speech from the floor of the Senate. "I hope those votes do not reflect a time that has slipped away when partisanship did not infect every facet of our political life."
Bond told the Senate he wants to see a time when Senators put politics aside - something he says then-Senator Barack Obama refused to do when he voted against President George W. Bush's nominees.
"I could not forget that time as, regrettably, President Obama did when he was in the Senate," said Bond. "I could easily say, as Senator Obama said, that I disagree with a nominee's judicial approach and that allows me to oppose the nominee of a different party. Luckily for President Obama I do not agree with Senator Obama. I reject the Obama approach to nominees."
Bond says it's time to put politics aside when it comes to judicial nominees.
"From our liberal friends, I hope they remember this day when another qualified nominee is before the Senate who is conservative," said Bond. "The standard set by Senator Obama should not govern the Senate."
Bond then expressed his satisfaction that the Senate has reviewed the Sotomayor nomination, with no significant findings against her, and urged his colleagues to follow him in voting to confirm her.

It is with great disappointment that the Buchanan County Republican Central Committee finds the need to submit this letter expressing our discontent with Senator Kit Bond’s decision to vote in favor of the appointment of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.
The committee fully recognizes and appreciates Justice Sotomayor’s background and service, but feels her past rulings and public comments are in conflict with the appropriate role of a justice on the highest court in the land. We are saddened that a fellow Republican entrusted
with the responsibility to vote on her qualifications and temperament believes otherwise.
The Buchanan County Republican Central Committee has a long history of support for Senator Bond. Many of our members have volunteered tirelessly on his campaigns — many since his days as Governor of this great state. It is with regret that we must condemn his announced yes vote on the confirmation of Justice Sotomayor.
In his statement to the press, Senator Bond noted that “elections have consequences”. By ascribing an affirmative vote on her confirmation as the result of “elections have consequences”, Senator Bond diminishes the balance of power constitutionally provided through the Senate confirmation process. His actions deny us, the voters who elected him, those same, resulting “elections have consequences” benefits since he is abdicating the senatorial powers he earned when we elected him.
While fully aware that Republicans lost the Presidential race in 2008, as a committee we understand that the loss does not mean we must abandon our principles as a political party by giving a free pass to those who would tear down the foundations of our great nation. Nominee Sotomayor’s past statements and actions do not reflect the fair-minded values of the US Constitution, Missourians, or the Republican Party.
We respectfully request that Senator Bond reconsider his position on this vote and cast a NO vote for the confirmation of Justice Sotomayor.
If his yes vote is an attempt to leave public service with a legacy of bipartisanship at the expense of conceding his principles, we would remind him of what an empty legacy that would be. We hope that he will finish his long tenure as a public servant by clinging to the foundations that have returned him to office for so many years.

Riiiight!!! And because a republican senator won't overrule a democrat President's choice, no matter how liberal, biased, or unqualified, he expects that, if and when the situation is reversed, democrats will return the favor. Tell that to Robert Bork!

Normally, he's not like this. I guess with nothing to lose, this sort of thing happens. Term limits in the legislature have given us a bunch of republicans that block all sorts of stuff.
His cover is the bi-partisan tally for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Someone needs to ask him a follow-up, do you agree with racial profiling, because Sotomeyer sure does.
