(R-TX) Cornyn Pushes Back On Sotomayor Vote
Washington comPost ^ | 8/5/2009 | Chris Cillizza

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) dismissed as "Democratic cheerleading" the idea that voting against the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court will negatively impact the standing of his party with Hispanics.

"The disagreement that I and others have is not personal to Judge Sotomayor," said Cornyn at a briefing for reporters today. "I frankly wound up liking her on a personal level."

Cornyn's comments came just minutes after Sen. Robert Menendez (N.J.), the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and a Hispanic, said (in Spanish) that "Republicans will pay a price for saying 'no' to this judge."

Cornyn alleged that criticisms of Republican opposition to Sotomayor as anti-Hispanic flies in the face of past statements made by Democrats relating to the nomination of judge Miguel Estrada to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 2003 as well as the criticism directed at former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The vote on Sotomayor is expected tomorrow evening. To date, seven Republican Senators have announced they will vote for her while 28 have indicated they will cast a "no" vote. There are four three GOP Senators -- Judd Gregg (N.H.), George Voinovich (Ohio), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and John Barrasso (Wyoming) (Barasso is a "no") -- who have yet to announce how they will vote.

I don’t know about paying a price with the Hispanics. Most hispanics hate the Puerto Ricans. They do around here anyways.

This is why we call them RATS. What a horrible, divisive, race-baiting, cowardly thing for them to do. They are lower than worms at the bottom of a sewer.

I seem to remember that back when I was stationed at Kelly.

There is nothing more racist than to treat all Hispanics as if they are all of one monolithic ignorant mindset driven by identity politics and not capable of differentiating the issues. It is stupid and it is racist and those Republicans who fall into the trap of adding fuel to this should be ashamed because if they are voting for her not because they believe she will be a good judge defined in the respect of the constitution and the law as written then they are demonstrating not only a lack of respect for the constitution but also a lack of respect for the Hispanics whose votes they want to win by pandering to racial group sentiments.

Interesting that you mention that. I was just in Mexico for business this week and went to lunch with a Cuban and two of the local Mexican engineers. The Cuban engineer lives in New York and is looking for places to retire.

“Costa Rica, Panama, the Yucatan... anywhere but Puerto Rico.”

I asked what was so bad about Puerto Rico and he gave a vague answer, then said something in Spanish to the Mexicans which caused them to laugh.

I’m an American of Irish decent living in New York... perhaps there was something he said to the Mexicans about Puerto Ricans that wasn’t politically correct enough to say to someone like me that he didn’t know well.

Yeah, so I did get the impression that they didn’t like the actual people, not the island itself.
