I love these members, they get up and say, Read the bill. What good is reading the bill if its a thousand pages and you dont have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?
- U.S Representative John Conyers (D-MI, 14th District)
I have to admit I have a soft spot in my heart for John Conyers, who in a now-famous video performance declared his hatred for reading, reading of bills proposed for consideration in the House and pretty much anything having to do with performing his job in the first place.
Yup, it takes cojones the size of bowling balls to get up in front of a National Press Club forum and admit to ignorance. But I forget that he represents Michigan's 14th (Detroit) congressional district. Let's face it: Any town that could tolerate -- and in fact, celebrate -- disgraced former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and bribe-taking Councilwoman Monica Conyers (John Conyers' wife, as it turns out) for so long (until protestors finally stepped in put a stop to the madness) probably gets the government it deserves.
The honorable Congressman, as it turns out, is the recipient of yet another dubious award; that of being the Michigan congressional delegation's most absent member this past session. Seems the old boy missed 86 votes, according to this Washington Post report, giving him a nearly 13 percent fail rate in terms of total votes missed out of total House votes cast. He also ranks among the worst offenders in the entire House of Representatives, too, coming in at 14th out of 435 members, according to an article in today's Detroit News. The average missed-vote rate in the House is 3.4 percent, just for the record.

Yeah. The guy is my representative. I live in Trenton, which is why the E.S. article intrigued me. Not that it was telling any of us who don’t live in Detroit what we didn’t already know about the guy. That’s okay, though...we have a big rally planned for his Trenton office on the 22nd ;-)
Ping.
aw.. give him a break, he’s been doing the job for 45 years- second longest amount of time in office next to dingell- MI 15th district.
/false sympathy
