Layoffs at Puerto Rico PBS Affiliate

SAN JUAN - Puerto Rico Corporation for Public Broadcasting President Israel “Ray” Cruz confirmed that he will submit a plan to the Workers' General Union (UGT) on Friday to lay off an undisclosed number of its members.

"We are submitting a layoff plan tomorrow which includes a group of union members," Cruz told radio station WKAQ.

According to Cruz, a one-hour cut in the workday was discontinued on Thursday following the protest the UGT held the day before in front of [PBS affiliate] WIPR in Hato Rey.

"Also because of a complaint that was filed against me on July 21 where the UGT is claiming that we were not supposed to institute a cut in the workday. I have said that this is something we were bound to do by Article 19, Section 4 of the bargaining agreement, which states that before a layoff is decreed, a workday reduction must be instituted," he said.

"We cut the workday, they are against the workday cut, [so] we will have to determine from where we are going to cut some $750,000 more from the corporation," he pointed out.

Cruz alleged that the UGT has not sent him a written proposal for the corporation to save money without proceeding with layoffs.

However, UGT President Juan Eliza Colón demanded on Wednesday the elimination of the juicy contracts worth thousands that Cruz has granted to those close to Governor Luis Fortuño's campaign.

Although I admit I don't know the details of what is going on at WIPR, Cruz is showing some cojones by facing a union.

How true! With the gazillions of dollars it makes in tie-in merchandise, the Sesame Workshop does not need a single cent of taxpayer money.
