GUADALAJARA, Mexico President Obama said Monday that efforts to change the immigration system would be a major focus for his administration only next year, after other major priorities were accomplished, including passage of a new health care system.
Its very important for us to sequence these big initiatives in a way where they dont all just crash at the same time, he said, according to The Associated Press.
Mr. Obama, flanked by the leaders of Mexico and Canada, spoke here at a news conference after an annual trilateral summit meeting. Responding to a range of questions on domestic and international issues, he also said the United States was committed to the return of the ousted president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya.
Mr. Obama offered a spirited defense of Mexicos fight against drug traffickers, brushing aside suggestions that some American financial assistance ought to be withheld because of human rights abuses by the army.
Repeating a line used often by President Felipe Calderón of Mexico, Mr. Obama labeled the drug traffickers causing so much violence in both Mexico and the United States as the biggest violators of human rights.
The American aid package for Mexico states that 15 percent of the funds about $100 million can be disbursed only if the State Department decides that the Mexican government meets certain human rights conditions. Reports that Mexicos army has engaged in torture and other abuses while carrying out the drug war have prompted human rights groups and some American lawmakers to oppose releasing those funds.
Clearly pleased by the words of support, Mr. Calderón said his government had worked scrupulously to respect human rights. We have an absolute, complete commitment to human rights, he said. Our fight against the cartels is about the human rights of the Mexican people.
But...

He's right about one thing: "...ultimately, I think the American people want fairness." Yes they do. And fairness means people abiding by the rules and our laws, and not being rewarded when they don't -- at the expense of the American people.
I agree. He hasn’t been in politics long enough, and certainly wasn’t in the Senate long enough, to have a feel for how election timing impacts the chances of controversial legislation passing. And apparently none of his wiz-bang staff have a clue, either.
Jimmy Carter was bad(I don’t remember how it was with him, was way too young, but I have been told by members of my family) but Obama is 20 times worse. If Obama’s plans are not stopped, it might be irreversible
If we can take back the house or reduce the dem #s in the senate in 2010, he may never get a chance to ram thru amnesty or his other leftest legislation.
Good, that will be closer to the next election. i dare them to proceed then.
Doesn’t matter if we take them back or not. His chances of passing amnesty grow smaller every day. Next year, an election year, they will be nil. The closer to an election you get, the less likely it is you can pass iffy legislation. That’s why they are trying to get cap and trade this year, and the health-care Rube Goldberg socialization plan. Next year, all bets are off because most of them have their minds concentrated by a looming election and become risk-averse. The Dem leadership, most of whom are in safe districts, will try to bully it through, but as I said, the closer you get to an election, the lower their chances of success become. And boy has he thumbed his nose at the open borders crowd. What a site to see.
The arrogance is waist high.
Blow it out your human, Barry.
He’s lying.
Don't be too sure.
It was a Republican president, and a lot of Republicans in the Senate and House (led by John McCain) who were in the pocket of the Wall Street Journal and the Chamber of Commerce that tried to force amnesty on us last time.
And those RINOs - Graham, McCain, Sam Johnson, Cornyn, Flake - are still around.
Ut oh——by now, we know when he makes statements like this....he’s planning to do just the opposite of what he says.
This is what I fear may be our downfall. We've already let them (ACORN/Socialists) get away with voter fraud on a massive scale. In reality absolutely nothing was done about it and in fact it was barely talked about while they rigged the elections right under our noses. Does anyone think the Obamas have ANY fear whatsoever of rigging the 2010 elections? I just hope our goose is not cooked already.
I think there’s a halfway chance that could happen, that is, Congress will insist despite his priorities (see Smuckie Schumer), but it would be the coup de grace for his approval ratings, and perhaps his re-election chances. He already is in deep doo-doo over health care, and adding amnesty at the same time could drive him over the brink.
fear the islamic tidal wave
Obama lies????
still beating the Zelaya horse? proof positive he refuses to accept being wrong.
2010????....I thought he said today a bill would be pushed voted on by the end of the year?
check out who mans most urban County Recorder’s Offices nationwide, (where the poll counted votes are tallied)
“We have been very clear in our belief that President Zelaya was removed from office illegally, that it was a coup, and that he should return. We have cooperated with all the international bodies in sending that message. Now, if these critics think that its appropriate for us to suddenly act in ways that in every other context they consider inappropriate, then I think what that indicates is, is that maybe theres some hypocrisy involved in their approach to U.S.-Latin America relations that certainly is not going to guide my administration policies.”
is he saying the left wing considers his meddling inappropriate? in every other context they consider inappropriate? thats not the conservative base. very odd.
Just in time for the election.
Vote Democrat. :D
Go to any Walgreens, or large supermarket and start reading the labels.
You'll find your candy or cereal or whatever is a 'product of US, Canada & or Mexico'.....or variations of this.
Our beef at Publix (a large supermarket chain in the South) sold their beef as 'product of US or Mexico'....
Many of us loudly objected, and ta da....they've suddenly found those American cows and now it says 'product of USA'...
