Dingell: Protesters Remind Me of KKK
Weekly Standard ^ | 8/11/09 | John McCormack

Posted on 08/11/2009 6:57:52 PM PDT by pissant

John Dingell (D-Mich) on MSNBC:

Well, the last time I had to confront something like this was when I voted for the civil rights bill and my opponent voted against it. At that time, we had a lot of Ku Klux Klan folks and white supremacists and folks in white sheets and other things running around causing trouble.

Note to Think Progress: You're supposed to blog about things that will hurt Republicans, not Democrats. George Soros is going to be very very angry at you.

Playing that funky race card, boy is that thing moth eaten and weather worn.

Just throw the racist label out there and all the white folks get scared and shut up.

It aint working any more Dingle-berry. The threat of being called a racist is not near as horrifying as this Health Care Bill getting passed.

This is just more evidence that ordinary white people in this country have been too passive, too distracted, and too long absent from vocal debate with these clowns. Well, no more.

not under obamacare...he would be ‘counseled’ to pick less costly measures for the good of the State.

Dingell-berry must have mistaken the a protester for Sheets Byrd.

Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd, Ex-Klansman
by Michelle Malkin (March 8, 2001)

Ex-Klansman Robert Byrd, the senior senator from West Virginia, casually used the phrase "white nigger" twice on national TV this weekend. Enraged civil rights groups organized a protest campaign against Sen. Byrd and demanded that he undergo sensitivity training ... not.

The ex-Klansman, you see, is a Democrat. Democrats can join hate groups and utter the ugliest racial slurs and get away with it because they are Democrats. They belong to the party of racial tolerance and understanding. They're paragons of virtue, and the rest of us are bigoted rubes.

The ex-Klansman showed his true colors when asked by Fox News Sunday morning talk show host Tony Snow about the state of race relations in America. Sen. Byrd warned: "There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."

__________________________________________________________

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

In 1942, 24-year-old Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), whose parades in Matoaka, West Virginia, he had witnessed in his childhood. He was unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops, or leader, of his local chapter.[4]

Byrd, in his autobiography, attributed the beginnings of his political career to this incident, although he lamented that they involved the Klan. According to Byrd, a KKK official told him "You have a talent for leadership, Bob... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd recalls that "suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[4] He participated in the KKK during World War II, holding the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops. He did not serve in the military during the war, working instead as a welder in a Baltimore, Maryland shipyard, where he helped build warships.[citation needed]

Byrd commented on the 1945 controversy about racially integrating the military. Byrd, when he was 28 years old, wrote to segregationist Senator Theodore Bilbo, of Mississippi, vowing never to serve in such a military:

"Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.[5]"

He had earlier written "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side".[6][7]

I was wondering when they would liken the town hall attendees to people like George Wallace and others who opposed Civil Rights legislation. I need wonder no more. The subject has been broached. Frankly, I’m surprised it took this long.

The Left has gone insane. Never before in the history of our Republic that a President and his party have declared war on regular citizens because these citizens do not agree with their domestic agenda.

It is just unbelievable and it is extremely scary. Our Republic is now going through the most dangerous phase in her history since the Civil War. The lunatic Left led by the President and his socialists simply decided to destroy the Constitution and declare war on citizens who oppose them.

There was a time when elected leaders respected us, they did not call us names.. not that long ago.

In the summer of 1989, Mr. Rostenkowski, then a congressman from Illinois and the powerful chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, was besieged by a crowd of 50 senior citizens in Chicago . . . the protesters -- shouting "coward," "recall" and "impeach" -- forced him to sprint through a gas station to his car. . .[where they proceeded to rock his government limo if I remember correctly]

The protesters were angry about [a new Medicare law] . . .That law was soon repealed . . . the television images of Mr. Rostenkowski under assault struck fear in the hearts of politicians . . .

"Politicians were traumatized by the Rostenkowski episode," said Henry J. Aaron, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution."

If we did what citizens have done before in our history we could be charged with terrorism for going after a Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party) leader or stalwart.

Dingel probably imagines that he voted FOR the civil rights laws.

He's provided no proof of that ~ and absent proof, when a Congresscritter claims something about how he voted, it's best to dismiss it out of hand.

At the moment, as far as Dingel's evidence goes HE VOTED AGAINST CIVIL RIGHTS, just like he wants to do now.

It’s really bad when the primary author of HR 3200 can’t/won’t defend/debate his bill on the merits and instead just calls those in principled opposition racists.

I’ve seen better debating skills used by my son (aqe 11) in his summer-long campaign to trade in the Playstation2 for an Xbox 360.

“I voted for the civil rights bill and my opponent voted against it”

Just who was in office to vote? Dingle or his opponent? It seems that they both could not hold the same office at the same time. IMHO I think his opponent probably voted for civil rights and Dingle as the opponent was not in office to even vote.

Good job on your post. It is just plain gall that Dems have that allows them to deny reality and history. My own opinion is that they can get away with rewriting history because the citizenry have been totally dumbed down by our corrupt public education system.
I have heard over and over from folks my age category (70’s and more) that they have enjoyed almost every minute of life so far (and are extremely thankful for it) but like me, don’t want to be around if and when the Socialists get final control of this country. We will be on the underside of the grass, but will feel sorry for our kids, grand kids and their offspring.

“At the start of each Congress, Dingell has introduced legislation (H.R. 15 in the 110th Congress) which proposes a national health plan financed by value-added tax and the National Health Care Trust Fund. He continues to pursue a U.S. Patients’ Bill of Rights.[5] He personally favors a single-payer plan and government-run insurance program, but he followed the Clintons’ proposal, managed competition, during the Clinton administration. “
