House Democrats Will Likely Prevent Vote to Remove Abortion From Health Care

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- When members of Congress return from their August recess, the first battle over the abortion funding found in the health care bills will occur in the House. There, it appears Democratic leaders will prevent a vote on an amendment to remove the abortion funding from the bill.

The House version of the health care bill, HR 3200, currently allows a scheme whereby the federal government will pay for abortions under the plan.

Rep. Bart Stupak has announced that he will sponsor an amendment on the House floor to change that, similar to the one members of a House panel defeated.

But, House members may never have a chance to vote on the Stupak amendment to stop taxpayer-financed abortions because it appears House Democrats won't allow it.

In an interview this week, pro-abortion Rep. Louise Slaughter, who chairs the House Rules Committee, said there won't be many changes to the three versions of the bill that the House panels each approved.

"I don't foresee a lot of changes from what came out of committee," Slaughter said at a press conference.

Leading pro-life advocates expect the Rules Committee to adopt rules for debate that prevent Stupak's amendment from getting a vote.

As Douglas Johnson, the legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, explains to LifeNews.com, that could open the floodgates for pro-life and moderate Democrats to join Republicans in voting against the rules for debate.

If the rule is defeated, chaos could ensue as House Democrats would be unable to bring up the health care bill for a debate and vote and may have to go back to committee to include the abortion funding revocation pro-life advocates want.

"Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rules Committee Chair Slaughter, Congressman Henry Waxman, and the other top pro-abortion Democrats have embedded language in H.R. 3200 -- the Capps Amendment -- that would explicitly authorize the big new government insurance plan to pay for abortion on demand, and that would authorize big new federal subsidies for private plans that cover elective abortion," he explains.

"Slaughter now announces that the 'rule' that her committee will craft will not even allow the House vote on the NRLC-backed Stupak-Pitts Amendment, the amendment that would keep abortion out of these big new federal programs," he said.

"Congressman Stupak has already announced that if the rule does not permit his amendment, he will lead other pro-life Democrats in voting against the rule -- which is the procedural bridge that the bill must pass to reach the House floor," Johnson added.

Johnson told LifeNews.com that pro-life groups will score votes on the rule for debate if it disallows the Stupak amendment because it would essentially cement abortion funding in the bill.

"Any House member who votes for the rule is, in effect, voting in favor of establishing a giant federal health plan that will pay abortionists with checks drawn on a federal government account," Johnson concluded.

Slaughter said members of the House staff have already begun working on melding the three committee bills together into the one piece of legislation members will consider when they return on September 8.

ACTION: Contact Rep. Louise Slaughter and members of the House rules Committee and ask them to allow a vote on the Stupak-Pitts amendment to stop abortion funding in health care. Email Slaughter here and go to this link to find a list of the members of the committee. You can also call any member of Congress at 202-224-3121.

The left doesn't give a damn about health care if they don't get to kill people.

If they don’t vote to remove the provision then they are admitting the provision is there just like a majority have been saying.

Rep. “Slaughter” - how appropriate! Another HUGE reason this Health/Death Care reform must be rejected by the American people. Polls have shown repeatedly that we do NOT want our tax dollars used for abortion. If a woman wants this procedure, the law (today) says she can have one for any reason and at any time in her pregnancy, but we the people should not be forced to pay for it!

My guess is they'll pass some benign watered down version of a health care bill. Then incrementally reattach the contentious (evil?) parts later through unrelated appropriations bills. This isn't going away IMO.

What is it about the Left that regularly leads to the death of millions?

1940s Germany, USSR , North Korea, Cambodia, China, Cuber and western leftist countries via abortion all ended up killing millions in the name of statist utopias.

The socialist SCOTUS of 1973 was the first American “Death Panel.”

Already responsible for a greater selective genocide than all other socialist agendas combined—including Stalin,Hitler,Mao,Pol Pot and other sundry statist slaughterers throughout modern history.

The only difference between Roe V Wade and The Wannssee Conference was the that one was in German and the other English.

The fascist elite in both cases were of one mind.

It all started with the leftists in France in the late 18th century during the French Revolution.

For the record, the worldwide death toll in the past century is approximately ONE BILLION innocent human beings.

Additionally, Rachel’s Carson’s leftist manifesto, “Silent Spring” has been responsible for between 50 and 80 million deaths.

If the American people truly understood the magnitude of abortion, they would demand an end. Whenever I tell someone that over 50 MILLION babies have been killed since 1973, they don’t believe me until I show them proof. More Americans die in abortuaries EACH DAY than died on 9/11/01.

Few appreciate how our revolution ended up with the Constitution while the French revolution went on for decades in war, misery and despair.

France has not had a significant period of stability since the French Revolution.

The left would never even consider a health care bill that didn’t include money to kill babies.

Long long ago,I loaned a friend money to provide his girlfriend an abortion and later—still long long ago—I physically assisted in another.

So in my youthful ignorance I was an accessory to two homicides, yet in my following awakening to the true sanctity of human life,I have dealt with these evils of my youth—meaning deep regret but redeemed somewhat with the awareness and now rejection of the stupidity of youth and it's everlasting leftist ideology of blind acceptance of current fashion.

Here in SC some see the Confederate Battle Flag as a symbol of hate, some don't care either way and others see the Stars and Bars as a beloved heritage.
I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the positive—the emotion of love.

Same goes for Pro-Life versus Pro Abortion...

Where would God lean—towards the loving positive or the hating or indifferent negative?

I thought the Hyde Ammendment absolutely prohibited ANY Federal funds for abortion and is still in effect...?

Is this funding in private insurance plans? If so, it is legal and no one is forced to use those plans. Help me out here.

Since I’m Catholic all Catholics ought to be able to opt out of this based on religious rights guaranteed in the Constitution with no penalty for doing so.

Congressional Legislation (with Executive approval) or Executive Orders (sans Congressional defunding or impeachment of said executive) are the laws of the land unless or until SCOTUS says no.

Any President has the constitutional power to become a dictator for at least a little while—longer or forever with a pliant Congress or a feckless SCOTUS.

Just don't elect a Marxist as President and there is nothing to worry about.
