Whole Foods CEO's Health Care Views Provoke Some Customers to Boycott Store (CORPORATE VAMPIRES!)
FOXNews ^ | Aug15.09 | staff

Protesters are hoping a boycott will cut into the success of Whole Foods, the 10th largest food and drug store in the U.S., which reported sales of $1.8 billion for last quarter, a 2 percent increase from the previous quarter.

Calls to boycott Whole Foods Market are growing louder and more sophisticated following a Wall Street Journal opinion article by the company's chief executive, John Mackey, in which he criticized President Obama's health care plan and offered his own alternative.

Mackey's article first prompted individuals to threaten taking their business elsewhere. But now the Progressive Review, an online alternative publication, is calling for a formal boycott, and campaigns are popping up all over, including on Facebook, a popular online social networking site.

Protesters are hoping a boycott will cut into the success of Whole Foods, the 10th largest food and drug store in the U.S., which reported sales of $1.8 billion for the last quarter, a 2 percent increase from the previous quarter.

As of Saturday, the Whole Foods Internet forum had more than 4,000 postings. One commenter thanked http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/forums/index.php for revealing his political views.

"While it was a horrible business move, it was a great courtesy," a commenter identified as boycottwf wrote. "Now, I know that my dollars spent at whole foods are going to fund your misguided conservative views."

The commenter added, "Until you publically apologize to the nation and pledge that you will provide better benefits to your employees, I will not spend another dime at your store."

You can, for example: read the linked op-ed piece that is the subject of this post.

I was busy donating monthly and for the drive. Try it some time! Cheers, meu amigo...: )

I can be snarky, too!

No, and I do not shop there all the time, I use local growers, dairy, farmers markets etc but also WF uses the local talents and supports local growers as well etc by carrying many of them in their stores. Real customers no that so these boycotters have probably never shopped there as they would know this. So easy to expose the fakers in society.

However I will shop there this week when I am in their WF area. They have great pizza as well--caprese!

Obama will just chase all PRODUCTIVE business out of America to Switzerland (adjustable taxes) or some other county...then we will be truly an International community. It will not matter where we live anymore. Over the century people have traveled to work in their profession. Very few still live in the town/city of which they were born. Jobs took them further into America. Now jobs will take them further overseas..bound to happen NAFTA at some point. It would be the SELL OUT OF OUR FREEDOMS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA UNDER THE INEXPERIENCE OBAMA..an empty suit, a pensioner going shopping, and a California Granny.

We don’t go to Whole Foods. It’s full of aging hippies and the Birkenstock crowd, and the store and the people both smell bad. Plus the food is outrageously overpriced.

Safeway is lots better.

I’d like to support whole foods, but I really can’t see paying $5 for a head of lettuce.

The quality of food at Whole Foods is actually quite excellent - and not all of it is necessarily organic.

Contrary to popular belief, there are many conservative and libertarian types that shop at the Whole Foods. I am glad to hear about this "boycott" because it will help raise awareness and drive additional business to the store.

It will be very rewarding to see that this "liberal" boycott actually results in increased business at the Whole Foods!

It is not all organic in the sense of tofu or rice paper cracker etc..and what's wrong with organic milk..I don't like to buy corporate milk. I live where food is fresh, fish is fresh, meat and dairy fresh..even beer is from microbreweries (WF) and that is organic. Cottage industry thrives as farmers in the NE are not part of the farm welfare in the Midwest. There had to be a niche. We are not talking about corporate organic foodstuff.

However I do not buy recycled paper towels,etc..fall apart..I do not buy the organic detergents as even got a rash and never had a rash in my life but for two times..in the diaper and eating too much lobster in one sitting. Much of organic is overpriced..but then again you buy fresh and what's wrong with fresh?

I support local farmers, growers as they sell to WF as do other local small business entrepreneurs-toothpaste Tom's of Maine, flowers locally grown, icecream Giffords, candy..etc

Safeway is not available in our area, nor is Trader Joes..but they are all great stores. I am not an aging Hippy, don't smell and do I shop there periodically as do many other FReepers as you see..your comment was rather insulting to those of us that choose to shop at WF. Stereotypical.

This is a list of the top stores in the US.

1.Wegmans
2. Trader Joes
3. Publix
..the newer Hannafords are where I get things on a more timely basis..

There were a bunch crowding the aisles at Trader Joe's tonight. I heard one whining about how difficult it is to find organic bananas and how much better they taste.

That's funny. Only a few weeks ago, the libtards were on Trader Joe's case for importing hummus and couscous from Israel.

I shop at both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and I see libtards at both (one of the Whole Foods outlets I patronize is located in the People's Republic of Cambridge). However, the libtards at Trader Joe's are definitely smellier.

I can’t afford to shop at Whole Foods regularly, but I like going there every now and then, particularly for the essential oils, candles and beauty products. It’s also a good place to get cheese with non-animal rennet.

don’t. Shop around and see what works. I like the whole bean coffee and they have great spices and low cholesterol foods for my wife as well as a lot of soy based products that my daughter needs. They also have the best prepared foods in any store.
I have shopped there since they moved into Arlington VA and I don’t regret it but you have to be selective because no head of lettuce is worth $5.

Safeway is lots better.

In my experience, their prices are competitive with the likes of Safeway and Stop & Shop and the rest. However, you still end up spending more there, because they are so much better at merchandising. It's the secret to their competitiveness (although having an intelligently constructed health care plan for their employees doesn't hurt, either).

I don't pay $5 for a head of lettuce (buy bib)...and I buy locally. I am not buying lettuce outside of my state say from Calif, Mexico; just like I won't buy tomatoes from outside. I will sometimes buy Canadian as I am a neighbor, in my local US stores. I read my labels/date stamps etc..

Whole Foods has great stuff but I have always been a little reluctant to shop there because I thought they were in the Ben and Jerry’s Marxist mold. Apparently not.

So now I’ll feel good about shopping there. The “hippies and weirdos” who work there are generally very nice, or at least in my experience, but I was always worried about where my dollars were going. At least it doesn’t sound like they’re going directly to Obama Central (anymore, that is).

So, do you think that the lefties placed Whole foods on their list of boycotting Glen Beck was their way of making us boycott Whole foods as well?

Which is it? Are they against Obamacare or are they boycotting Beck? Are they doing both? This is very confusing!

I want to support them for being against Obamacare and I want to boycott them for taking advertisement away from Beck....

We live about sixty miles away from the Reno, Nevada store. Sweet Hubby and I shop at Whole twice a month for produce and baked goods. Their bread is excellent, and unpolluted by soy flour or soy oil.

Read his column at the WSJ link in Post #1. It is excellent.

Whole Foods is pricy, but I do love the great chicken salad.

We need to support Mackey.

Thanks for the common sense about ObamaCare & socialism...

John Mackey adds some great points to the debate.

I went shopping at Whole Foods today and left an encouraging note on their bulliten board for him.

Where did you get the idea that Whole Foods is boycotting Glen Beck?

Here’s a list of Beck’s advertisers, both those who have withdrawn and those who are still buying airtime:
http://www.defendglenn.com/advertisers.php

You’re apparently confusing two issues: the companies who have yanked ads from Beck’s program, and the president of Whole Foods, who wrote a column criticizing Obamacare and offering rational alternatives.

We need to:

— support Mackey/Whole Foods (and tell them why),
— support those who continue to advertise with Beck (and tell them why)
and
— boycott those who have withdrawn from Beck (and tell them why).
