RETREAT : White House appears ready to drop 'public option'
Associated Press Writer ^ | August 16, 2009 | PHILIP ELLIOTT

WASHINGTON – Apparently ready to abandon the idea, President Barack Obama's health secretary said Sunday a government alternative to private health insurance is "not the essential element" of the administration's health care overhaul.

The White House indicated it could jettison the contentious public option and settle on insurance cooperatives as an acceptable alternative, a move embraced by some Republicans lawmakers who have strongly opposed the administration's approach so far.

Officials from both political parties reached across the aisle in an effort to find compromises on proposals they left behind when they returned to their districts for an August recess. Obama has been pressing for the government to run a health insurance organization to help cover the nation's almost 50 million uninsured.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the White House would be open to co-ops instead of a government-run public option, a sign Democrats want a compromise so they can declare a victory on the must-win showdown.

If it is dead the bill is dead because now the left will be screaming. This bill is a bad bill Republicans should now double down and kill this bill by pushing a clear agenda of private sector reform which Obama will never go for.

That’s the nature of government. Anybody who trusts government to do anything but try to grow and take power/freedom/liberty from the people is a fool.

That’s right. Don’t believe it.

Also I note they increased the number of uninsured in the article to “almost 50 million”. My wife and myself agree that’s probably accurate at the rate the Obamanites are ruining the employment picture here in this country. More and more have hit the unemployment lines, and continue to do so.

We, the People, need to insist that they burn the bills under consideration and start over!

Further .....We. the People, want 15 days minimum to review a completely new health care bill with an additional 15 days of town hall meetings BEFORE Congress begins its "floor debates".

And . . . We, the People. insist that the bill is not more than 100 pages and is read by the President, and every member of the Senate and House of Representatives.

“The Dems want to get rid of at least 90% of medical specialists by any means possible.”

Wrong. They dont wish to get rid of them at all. They simply want to CONTROL them. Specialists won’t go away..they will simply revert to being told what to do by the State, similar to Canada, but much worse.

But thats not the part that frightens me..the part that scares me is that the government will have access to your banking details. Once that happens, game over. Nothing left to take over, except your soul. And I suspect someone ELSE will move govt out of the way in order to accomplish that.

“For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way.”

I like this comment:

We got a lot of the groups that previously were against this - as now being 'on-board' (big Pharma, AARP, AMA, Federation of Hospitals).

The only reason I can see them getting behind this is that they don't see 'health reform' as a threat anymore - because the Dems caved on everything.

This person doesn't understand the nature of government regulation. The big boys in a regulated industry always like the regulation because it raises the cost of (barrier to) entry to smaller competitors, thus stalling the rate of innovation, stagnating or denigration quality, and artificially keeping prices high.

Capitalism is the consumer's friend. Regulation is the friend of big business and monopolists at the expense of the consumer.

Democrats are retreating to plan B, which is the co-op option. Problem is a co-op is just a back door way into a public option and eventual single payor. There is NO logical justifiable reason for any type of public option. There are at least 1300 insurance companies, many of which are NOT-FOR-PROFIT - we don’t need a public option to keep the insurance industry “honest”. The only reason for a public option is to evenutally get us into a single payor system. The democrats are liars.

Competition in any field is good but one of the competitors cannot be allowed to lose money and enjoy tax payer subsidy while driving everyone else out of business.

As I said in the other thread....

I fear this is more ‘focus group’ word change.

A COOP is a business organization owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit, right?

So is that much different than ‘public option’?

Especially since the Fed can effectively eliminate the choices?

And COOP sounds so farmer, fly-over country, friendly doesn’t it?

Sure, COOP they’ll fall for that.

“Don’t believe it”

You are correct. They’ll be tacking it on to some other screwed up, sympathetic bill—like special education—now, how could any congressperson be against special education?

“Apparently ready to abandon the idea, President Barack Obama’s health secretary said Sunday a government alternative to private health insurance is “not the essential element” of the administration’s health care overhaul.”

They’ll simply pass it later as an amendment to some other bill.

Anybody see the latest AARP commercial with the ambulance dodging traffic? They’re totally in the tank with Obama no matter what they say. Same talking points.
