Franken Talks Health Care[After Touring Mayo Clinic, Franken Supports President's Public Option]

Minnesota Senator Al Franken made a stop at the Mayo Clinic today as the U.S. Senate works on its own health care reform bill.

One of the more heavily debated issues when it comes to reform is that so-called public option or government run health care.

So today, we found out where Minnesota’s Senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar stand on that very topic.

Minnesota Senator Al Franken walked into the Kahler Grand Hotel this afternoon after touring Mayo Clinic.

Health care reform is one of the biggest domestic issues facing the federal government right now and Franken was quick to say he supports the President's idea of a public health care option.

"There's been a lot of misinformation about it. It's been called government take over health care. There's been a lot of figures thrown around that are really misleading,” says Sen. Al Franken.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, who was in Minneapolis today, says the slightly different not-for-profit co-op, may be the way to go.

"And one of the things we're starting to hear is we want to have some tug on the insurance companies so they offer good rates to us. We want to have some type of competition,” says Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

Both senators seem to be in line with what the President is proposing.

He spoke about the public option during a town hall meeting in Colorado on Friday.

"And the idea here would be that a government run non-for-profit would have its own option that people could sign up for. They wouldn't have to, but the could sign up for it and if it would keep its costs lower and provide a good quality service and good benefits... than that would help keep the insurance companies honest,” says President Barack Obama.

Whatever the final outcome is all three agree it has to resemble what Mayo Clinic is already doing.

"If we did health care around the country like we did in Minnesota all of this would be paid for,” says Franken.

The issue of a public option is likely to come up in Mankato later this week.

That's when, as we've reported Congressman Tim Walz will host a town hall forum on health care reform.

That happens at Mankato East High School this Thursday.

The doors open at 5:30.

held my nose and voted for Coleman

it wasn’t easy, and your reasoning was mine too, Minnesotans are going to learn the hard way for the overwhelming stupidity of supporting Democrats=>you pay, they spend

Funnier then Al Franken is his failure to mention that much of the service at the Mayo Clinic is for Canadians fleeing their failed system.

You may have to hold your nose again and vote for Coleman for Governor next year . . . I don’t think that you’ll see a Michelle Bachmann or some such 100% conservative running in the primary, and Coleman may be as good as it gets for the GOP. And the DFL is sure to nominate some whackjob, with the Independence Party candidate (if any) not that much better.

BTW, the 2010 elections will be crucial in MN, since the party that wins the governorship and legislature will control redistricting after the 2010 Census. Congressional redistricting in MN will be a huge deal in 2011, since MN is slated to lose a U.S. House seat.

The Democrats could draw a plan that leaves just one GOP district in the Twin City exurbs, one Republican-leaning district for conservative Democrat Collin Peterson, and 5 comfortably Democrat districts; the Republicans could draw one über-Democrat district in the Twin Cities core, one strongly Democrat district going from the Iron Range to the Catholic parts of Ramsey County (which would probably elect a pro-life, pro-gun Democrat like Oberstar) and 5 GOP-leaning districts in the rest of the state. Yes, the U.S. House delegation could be 5-2 Republican or 6-1 Democrat depending on the results of the 2010 state elections.

The only silver lining if the Democrats control redistricting and draw a map that hurts the GOP is that it may convince Michelle Bachmann or John Kline to run for the Senate against Klobuchar in 2012.

“For that matter how will the elite medical institutions survive?”

It’ll be available for important people - like politicians and Party bosses.

Just like the good ‘ole USSR.

I am from Minnesota, and I voted against Al Frankenstein, the commie pig clown. What an embarrassment!!! Voters who pull the lever for demoRATs in any state or for any office (including the 53% retards who voted for 0bozo) are without a doubt the dumbest people on the planet. That includes my hard left Phd educated boss, who is a complete idiot & buffoon when it comes to election time and supporting demoRAT socialists. Face it, the American voters who vote for demoRAT socialists are dumber than dirt. I don’t care how many titles are behind their name. Idiots & buffoons!!!

Norm Coleman didn’t leave much of a choice

Yes there was a choice. And people in MN picked the WRONG choice. Plain and simple.

Good point, the Minnesota Supreme Court also wanted their Democrat vote in the Senate
