The truly reprehensible part of this story IIRC is that they kept them alive, the girl for a day or two and multiple people outside of the group charged knew they were holding these kids and raping the girl and those folks SAID NOTHING. They didn't call the police, they didn't intervene, they didn't lift a hand. None of those folks are charged. Not a crime cause the victims were white. Now if the races were reversed in this story half the county would be under indictment.

Because “Snitches get stiches” One of those cute urban phrases. They complain about gangs killing each other then they dont talk to police.
You could see the defense now. They will trot out some headshrinker to say the youths were fighting back from decades of oppression. Then they will have Black Panthers in the courtroom giving the stink-eye to the jury.And there will one white person who feels guilty who will hold out.

We must take into account the vicious racial discrimination to which the alleged perpetrators were exposed throughout their lives.
