Senate Democratic Leadership Will Pass Health Care Reform “By Any Legislative Means Necessary”
ABCnews.com - Political Punch ^ | 08/19/09 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 08/19/2009 1:24:08 PM PDT by OldDeckHand

Amidst questions of whether or not any Senate Republicans will support a health care reform bill, Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., today said that the “White House and the Senate Democratic leadership still prefer a bipartisan bill.”

The Reid spokesman said that “neither the White House nor the leadership have made a decision to pursue reconciliation,” the somewhat controversial legislative process by which a bill is introduced in such a manner so that it requires merely 50 votes instead of 60 to proceed to a vote, thus removing the threat of filibuster.

Manley said that “we will not make a decision to pursue reconciliation until we have exhausted efforts to produce a bipartisan bill.”

“However,” he cautioned, “patience is not unlimited and we are determined to get something done this year by any legislative means necessary.”

“By any means necessary” is a phrase popularized by Malcolm X (demanding the rights of African-Americans to be respected in society), though it is thought to have originally been penned by French existentialist Jean Paul Sartre in his play about assassination “Dirty Hands” (in a line demanding the end of class).

"Remember when we all wanted Frist and the Pubs to go nuclear on the RATS a couple of years ago? (I forget the exact issue at the moment)"

Judicial appointments - specifically it had to do with a number of high-profile, appellate appointments that were being held up.

“cause they are going to go nuclear. I think their term is reconciliation.”

Yes, all you heard back then was “nuclear option” when it was the Republicans doing it, but they always clean it up with the civilized sounding word when they want to do the deed.

It might serve the Republicans well to show just how much the Democrats are shooting down real Health insurance reform.

lets get some ammendments out there that addresss tort reform, address the limits on insurance pooling across state lines, denial of service to those that cannot prove citzenship, tax credits for HSA’s for the middle class and lower income brackets.

and include an ammendment that states if a public option is implemented it will in no way take control over Tricare, VA, Medicare existing government subsidized plans.

Then we will see who refuses to work with whom.

You gotta love it.
"Somewhat controversial".
Not "outrageous".

So what would count as
"Soundly controversial"? Thumb screws and the rack?

If the Senate goes
For "Reconciliation"...
...Pitchforks and Torches...

What’s with MSM reporters, anyway? No self-respect nor respect for the truth. None at all.

They are absolutely activist and complicit. They have betrayed their profession and are traitors of this country.

Great ideas, all of them. The problem is, when the witch changed the parliamentary rules earlier this year, it foreclosed the Republicans from offering such amendments, at least in the House. And, for now, all we have is the House bill to look over. Nothing has even made it out of committee in the Senate, yet.

I believe - although I'm no expert - if they move forward with reconciliation, it would completely shut out the Republicans from offering any of the sound amendments you've proffered.

HotAir links to a good story where the Dems still face trouble if they choose reconciliation. First the parliamentarian may refuse to allow its use because reconciliation can only be used to pass a budget. If the get past that the Reps can retaliate by refusing to provide for unanimous consent to waiving the reading of bills. That would take the Senate out of the lawmaking business for this session.

'cause they are going to go nuclear. I think their term is reconciliation. If they do us that tactic the Republicans can demand under parliamentary procedures that all bill be read in their entirety on the floor of the Senate.

I am sure there is no guts in the GOP to demand something as partisan as that. GOP wants to be known as the party "that gets along" even while the opponents are stabbing you in the back - gotta just get along. Will get back in power when they show they have GUTS and will take on the RAT party on their own turf.

The damage could easily be undone after the 2010 elections since most of this monstrosity will not be enacted until 2013.

"Easily?" Taxes can go up and down a little, but I think you underestimate the difficulty of undoing a government "service."

I could be wrong, but I believe “immigration reform” that contains ANY kind of amnesty is dead so long as unemployment is in the double digits. There will be no appetite to address this issue, which is why it’s all but completely disappeared from public discussion.
++++++++++++++++

Every single position the dims take on any issue, succeeds in socking it to the American economy, while down! They are supreme idiots, imho. And they are doing massive medium term damage to all of us.

How they have even 31% strong approval in Rasmussen’s polling, shows how the school system has been implemented in their brain washing scheme.

Just because kids are coming out of the public schools brain washed, doesn’t mean they can think and debate - and its quite likely that if they’re embarassed, they’ll capitulate.

So that’s our task - make it embarassing to support these idiotic positions...it’s getting closer and closer to that.

We’re seeing quite a groundswell.

You have more power than you realize. The biggest power is the power of the purse.

STOP buying anything other than groceries and gas for a few months and see what happens.

CALL a general strike and walk out.

There are more working stiffs all over this country that can have an effect than the left.
