while others undergo a maturation process which leads them to be more careful in their sexual habits It isn't "maturation". It is "education".
But if they were more moral to begin with, they (and their partners) may never have contracted an STD in the first place.
You can abort a baby but STDs, not so much.

I've seen other reports that STD’s are a status symbol in the homosexual community. They call themselves “bug chasers” and they seek out those they call “gift givers” who have the disease they are looking to acquire.
