Federal Pay Continues Rapid Ascent

Snip... Figure 1 looks at average wages. In 2008, the average wage for 1.9 million federal civilian workers was $79,197, which compared to an average $49,935 for the nation’s 108 million private sector workers (measured in full-time equivalents). The figure shows that the federal pay advantage (the gap between the lines) is steadily increasing.

This, GM/Chrysler, Obamacare, and the “stimulus” spending are designed to lock in and expand the dem voting base while destroying the rest of us.

Well if that’s the average pay, then more than half federal government employees are working at a GS13 or higher.....which is total BS. Something doesn’t sound right here.

It sounds accurate. There are a lot of jobs with bonus’s and special pay categories.
We were looking at pay grades since our son is interviewing for a GS position. It sounds like he will start at nearly 80k..he does have a Phd.
Same situation in CA. Most govt jobs pay far more than civilian. If you add in the retirement benefits and health care..it is even wider difference. Plus..they are hiring and the private sector isn’t.
At some point we taxpayers aren’t going to be able to support all these parasites.
I walk with a group who are all retired CA govt types. They all retired at 55 with 100% pay and health care.
All guaranteed by the taxpayer. Now that CALPERS has lost a lot, the contributions from the Cities and State must go up, meaning even more of our taxes going to retirement rather than current projects.

Could be, but maybe not. This sort of comparison leads to the kind of thinking that prevailed 20 years ago ~ the Democrats thought they could balance the federal budget by imposing more co-pays on federal employee medical insuance.

Didn't work then; won't work now.

The fundamental difference here is that the federal chart does not include ALL federal employees, and the private sector chart does not include ALL private sector employees.

The data has been trimmed and hedged to make a point.

Also notice that even though the information is supposedly on a website somewhere THERE ARE NO URLs provided.

This is a great example and case study of how libs and the bureaucracies they give rise to work. The line many years ago was that because government jobs didn’t pay as well as private sector jobs you had to give them better benefits. At first it was job security, they said if we can’t match private sector pay at least we can give them job security. Along came the Civil Service Board. The it was was fringe benefits like vacation time or maybe health care. But after a while every benefit they enjoyed, paid holidays including their birthday, etc. had maxed out, better than anything the private sector offered. So then they set their sights on pay. Now, 50 or 60 years later you have a class slopping at the public trough who do less work and get more pay and benefits than anything the private sector has to offer with the exception of a very few in the upper level management.

And not only do they cost more per employee, there are more and more of them slopping at the public trough.

Add to the Civil Service benefits those that come with unions and you have a perfecta, paid for by those of use who can only dream of having such a job someday.

I know there are civil servants who work hard and care about their job and the people they serve, but they are the proverbial exception, not the rule.

So the average American employee has a PhD? Not in this world! In the federal government if you are making 79k you have at least a master’s degree, probably in science or engineering, or MBA. The other poster is right, these numbers are extremely suspicious.

I get retirement and healthcare, but it comes out of my pay, the government doesn’t throw it in on top of my salary. Bonuses are rare in my agency, and you have to stand out on the national stage in order to qualify for one. And even then, the government takes 30% of it back in taxes before it ever hits the paycheck.

Speaking as one of these parasites, most of the people I work with stay at their desks late into the night (a daily ritual for me since The Guy With The Ears made it impossible for me to leave work without having to calm down either a State Medicaid director or a bloated healthcare provider), have put in years of dedicated service doing the same, seldom claiming comp time because they didnt have approval to work late, and were doing so when employees in the private sector were taking 2-hour lunches, getting cash bonuses, staying in 5-star hotels on business trips, and doing nothing to earn it.

Virtually all clerical, janitorial and other lower level laborers are now contractors at most federal sites. You end up with only engineers, scientists, lawyers and other college graduates working as true federal employees. They are comparing apples to turnips here.

BTW, you’re talking about State employees if you’re referring to your walking buddies and CALPERS....totally different scenario.
