Honoré scolds La. on storms (Gen. Honore, Louisiana)

The military commander who helped bring order to New Orleans in the chaotic days after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 told people at a Baton Rouge luncheon on hurricane preparedness issues Saturday to start right away getting ready for the next potential disaster.

“I often say people in south Louisiana get more excited about getting ready for football season than getting ready for hurricane season,” retired Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré said. He was addressing a crowd of about 100 representatives of church groups and faith-based organizations at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Baton Rouge.

But the cost of waiting to prepare is high, he said.

“Every one dollar you spend on prevention saves you nine dollars later,” Honoré said, a factoid he repeated several times during his remarks.

Good advice from General Honore:

“Then, the cousin showed off his recreational vehicle that he uses to go tailgating at LSU games, his bass boat and several all-terrain vehicles.

Honoré’s reaction was not positive.

“You need to get rid of some of this junk,” he recalled telling his cousin. “You need to buy you some tarps. You need to get a generator and get a truckload of water.”

Russ Honore has been my friend for a number of years. I remember well during the aftermath of Katrina, jumping off a helicopter at the Super Dome to find Russ holding forth while sitting in a camp chair in the parking lot. He was the only guy I met for about two days who knew what the hell he was doing.

What do you mean, “stuck on stupid”?

Gen. Honore was leading recovery efforts in Louisiana during Katrina. He famously told a whole bunch of reporters in a room that they were “stuck on stupid”. It was fabulous. I bet there’s YouTube video — I’ll go check.

My apologies, the storm was Rita, not Katrina.

I remember when he took over operations. He was interviewed on TV. After the first three words out of his mouth I was wondering just where they got that hick. After the first three sentences I was on the edge of my chair watching one of the smartest men I have ever seen in a public endeavor.

Not the one who is. The one who said it. He was the First Army commanding general when Katrina happened, and they had him run the joint military task force that went in to help get New Orleans sorted out. He was doing a press conference with Ray Nagin, and one of the reporters asked him about the federal response, and he gently advised her not to get stuck on stupid.

So Obama has been in office over 6 months. Has he fixed New Orleans yet?

"My apologies, the storm was Rita, not Katrina."

Nope. It was Honore, in New Orleans after Katrina.

Yep, the “Me an’ Boudreaux jus got off my pirogue” persona was very carefully cultivated. It disarmed everyone. Beneath the facade is a brilliant man: well educated, thoughtful, and with an uncommon understanding of both technology and human nature.

Well many RVs have generators built in and are great fallbacks for when hurricanes knock out utilities.

The triggger-happy, can’t-shoot-stright-crowd at NHC has already named a big thunderstorm, Claudette, this year in an attempt to drum up some business for their TS brand but sales so far are still bleak.

Their flagship line has only one seller this year and most of it went to a mostly offshore audience that don’t even have two hands to clap together.

The folks at NOAA are on the verge of offering a bailout if they can get this do-nothing Congress past the major stumbling blocks before November when the all the Snowbirds go home.

You’re right, blam.

It was AFTER Katrina, but the interview happened a couple days BEFORE Rita hit.

(Great, now I get to unapologize!)
