The First Election of the Obama Backlash
Townhall.com ^ | August 28, 2009 | Michael Gerson

Posted on 08/28/2009 4:30:56 AM PDT by Kaslin

The late-night hotel desk clerk in Salem, Va., -- after my long drive from Washington down the Shenandoah Valley -- wanted to talk political philosophy. He intended to support Republican Bob McDonnell for governor in November on Madisonian grounds. "I vote both parties, but I don't want anyone having all the control." Obama, in his view, needed to be checked and balanced.

This is the durable tendency of Virginia politics. Since 1977, the political party that has won the presidency has, in every case, lost the Virginia governorship in the next election. This pattern of cussedness is holding, at least for the moment. McDonnell, Virginia's former attorney general, is currently well ahead of his Democratic opponent, Creigh Deeds -- in one poll leading by 15 percent among likely voters.

McDonnell, riding in a well-worn, 30-foot blue RV from dairy farm to winery to college campus, recounts to me how the political environment has changed from a year ago. "The business community," he says, "was the first to recoil" from policies such as card check and cap-and-trade. "But health care now dwarfs previous concerns -- handing over the best medical system in the world to the federal government. It affects everyone." Conservatives, he contends, are more activated than at any time since 1993. A young McDonnell campaign worker told me: "We have the enthusiasm Obama's people had last time."

It’ll be interesting to see how much if any campaigning Obama does for any of these Dem candidates across the country. My guess is more than a few Dems will want the messiah to stay away.

Watch out though.

There is noting the left won’t do to win. If it means lying, creating false flags, putting the Washington Post up to inserting a story that didn’t happen reported by some “anonymous sources,” or just attacking over nothing, they will.

Obama has become just like the first black Prez, WJClinton, the Kiss of Death for aspiring Rat candidates. Vote all Rats and Rinos out of office!

You’re right - never let down your guard. Like Rush says: it’s not time to get giddy yet.

The Washington Post already has a hundred stories to run that will attack any and all associated with McDonnell. None of them have any substance. Fortunately advertising revenues for newspapers just dropped 29%, the steepest drop in 3 years of nearly free-fall misfortune for this crowd. If the pubbies put up real republicans and/or conservatives, they’ll take back 75% of the seats lost to demhole freshmen. the demholes took many these right-leaning districts (like NY 29 where I am, for Bush twice by handy margins) by recruiting candidates that appeared like reasonable people. Massa only won by 1.6%. Navy background, talked the reasonable middle of the road schpeil. He won on Obama’s coat tails and because Kuhl was a boob, and the ignorant masses had been fed 8 years of evil-Bush-republican propaganda by the media sluts. But the guy’s a left-wing hack. if the pubbies put up a real R, their guy wins by 5% min and they regain the seat. if they put up some RINO wuss, we’re stuck with the demhole hack for 2 more....

This is not the first election of the backlash. A deep-blue district in Delaware was won by a Republican by a margin of some 30% in a recent special election.

I’ll be interested to see if Pelosi is much of a factor in 2010. She wasn’t in 2006 because Americans didn’t know who she was nor was she in 2008 because of the Presidential election.

“Don’t forget Corzine’s imminent shellacking in New Jersey.”

One hopes it’s going to be a sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelacking instead of just a regular shellacking.

IMHO

putting the Washington Post up to inserting a story that didn’t happen

This story by Gerson was actually printed in today's Washington Post editorial page, along with Obamacare slams by Krauthammer and Michael Kinsley.

I guess the usual lib whiners are all too verklempt over Teddy.

This is the strangest election in Virginia I’ve ever seen. I see signs for Bob McDonnell everywhere, but I have not seen a SINGLE Deeds sign.

I was in SF last week. They are angry at SanFRanNan. Why? Because the socialist agenda is not moving fast enough. I could not tell how dedicated they are to her next cycle. That is one messed up city. Totally schizophrenic.

Which is exactly why Obama has ordered Holder to go after the CIA. He needs to throw them a bone to chew on.

Yesterday I was in a part of Norfolk that is fairly liberal and I didn’t see any Deeds signs there either.

There's one small, lonely one on the way to my house. I feel kind of sorry for the poor little thing.
