U.S. Moves Toward Formal Cut Off Of Aid To Honduras

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) - U.S. State Department staff have recommended that the ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya be declared a "military coup," a U.S. official said on Thursday, a step that could cut off as much as $150 million in U.S. funding to the impoverished Central American nation.

The official, who spoke on condition he not be named, said State Department staff had made such a recommendation to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has yet to make a decision on the matter although one was likely soon.

Washington has already suspended about $18 million aid to Honduras following the June 28 coup and this would be formally cut if the determination is made because of a U.S. law barring aid "to the government of any country whose duly elected head of government is deposed by military coup or decree."

The official said that $215 million in grant funding from the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation to Honduras would also have to end should Clinton make the determination that a military coup took place.

So if the Iranian people get rid of Ahmanutjob the US is barred from providing aid?

So cut off foreign aid, boot out the UN, declare international agreements and trade deal not beneficiary to the US null and void, burn the Federal Reserve banks to the ground, and start using real money backed by something tangible. Coming soon via the 2nd American Revolution perhaps.

So cut off foreign aid,

Good.

... boot out the UN,

YES!

... declare international agreements and trade deal not beneficiary to the US null and void,

with caution and forethought, yes,

burn the Federal Reserve banks to the ground,

Just clean 'em out, the buildings ought to be worth something...

and start using real money backed by something tangible.

Sounds good to me. Unfortunately, the latter would mean we have to pay our debts in real money, and with the tab we've racked up, I'm not sure we could in 100 years.

Obama is leaving gaping holes for any conservative candidate in 2012 to exploit. No more phony McCain-style “he’s not a radical leftist” rhetoric. Someone has to say what is obvious: Obama is a radical leftist intent on destroying America.

Well, if you want your friends to fail so that you'll later deal with the strengthened enemies, you certainly have a point there...

Our government has also existed on tariffs for most of its history --- do you want a return to that too?

What “friends” do we have after spending all this money? I am unaware of any international support for issues important to us.

And if Honduras closes Soto Cano airbase to the U.S. in return? What’s Obama going to threaten them with then?

This is unbelievable...except that it’s not, of course.

This makes me nearly as angry as the healthcare thing.

Those State Department people (*spit*) know good and well that what happened in Honduras was no “coup”.

You’ve got a good point there. During the Cold War, we could justify it because propping up these friendly regimes was essential to our National Security strategies. Nowadays, there still may be some strategic interests we need to “buy off” but we really should take a look at the whole mess and see how much we can scrap as soon as possible.

Well maybe for TopQuik we would rather fight one large enemy, kick their putts and put an end to it or keep taking from the American people and failing everywhere.

Obama is fine with this. He will allow the Russians and Chinese, at Zelaya’s insistence, into that base. We will even repair the runways and facilities for them and have a change of command ceremony for them, for “Diplomatic” reasons.
