By act of Congress and the signature of President Obama, the eighth anniversary of 9/11 will be America's first officially designated National Day of Service and Remembrance.
How must this day unfold?
With reverence unsullied by politics or commerce.
With memory focused on the barbarity visited upon the United States.
With determination redoubled to protect the shores and defeat those who would murder again.
The concept of making service a hallmark of 9/11 anniversaries was championed by MyGoodDeed, an organization founded by family and friends of people killed in the attacks.
The group's mission statement calls for honoring "the victims of 9/11 and those who rose to service in response to the attacks by encouraging" good deeds and various volunteer activities.
"In this way we hope to create a lasting and forward-looking legacy - annually rekindling the spirit of service, tolerance, and compassion that unified America and the world in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks," the statement says.
To reclaim the unity of purpose that gripped the nation when anger and grief were strong and resolve even stronger would be wondrous. If a burst of selflessness does the trick, count us in.
But there are dangers.
Acts of kindness are easily distorted into propaganda, issues advocacy and attempts to redefine 9/11 for political purposes. This cheapening has already happened, and in the most inappropriate place - the White House.
The Obama administration supports creating clean energy jobs in cities through a campaign called Green the Block, started by the groups Green For All and the Hip Hop Caucus. After cabinet officials met with leaders of the organizations in the West Wing, aides posted a video and a statement on the White House blog.
Van Jones, an Obama environmental adviser, said 9/11 would be an opportunity to "connect, to find other people in your peer group who are also passionate about repowering America but also greening up America and cleaning up America."
And the Rev. Lennox Yearwood, head of the Hip Hop Caucus said:
"The first milestone for Green the Block will be on our National Day of Service, Sept. 11, 2009, where we will organize Green the Block service events around the country in coordination with the President's initiative, United We Serve."
No. Wrong. Entirely wrong.
9/11 is not about green jobs or health care or bank bailouts or about the ideologies and egos of celebrities who are planning concerts and other performances this year. To them, hands off.
And "remembrance" must not, must never, be forgotten.
It would be sacrilege to smother 3,000 murders under gauzy and fleeting good feelings.
It would be a gross betrayal to gloss the evil that targeted - and still targets - America.
The only ‘service’ I would consider on 9/11 is waterboarding a terrorist. Other than that, it’ll be all tears and prayers...
The trouble is that "determination to protect the shores and defeat those who would murder again" is inherently a political agenda, as far as the Democrats are concerned.

The left is fantastic at hijacking symbols.
Remember the rainbow? It used to be a symbol showing equality among all races, now it’s for homosexual supremacy.
How about the Hitler and Swatzastika; they used to represent the Nazi Socialistic party and evil incarnate; now it’s used to attack the Republican party.
The ‘Green’ groups used to be for supporting and preserving our national parks, now it’s a cause aimed at forcing everyone else on the planet to accept and adopt policies in line with the new over-lords.
Why would this be any different?
I would settle for kicking the chair out from one and strecthing his neck...
Will the New York Times do a special on Muslims being discriminated against for their 9/11 remembrance?
Or a hate piece against Israel?
Or a hit piece against conservatives?
Or maybe a condemnation of the CIA who protected us during the dark days after the attack? Or maybe the Times and Washington Post will do an envious attack on the widows of the attack.
Any thing - absolutely anything - other than remember the day as it was - a day more Americans died in an attack on our homeland than any other day in our history. A day we were attacked by Muslim extremest. A day more people died than at Pearl Harbor... the truth. The New York Times will write anything EXCEPT the truth.
Right now I am watching,”The Flight That Fought Back.”

How quickly we forget those almost 3,000 innocent Americans who were murdered by the Islamists.
Every American should view this video made by a New Yorker who lived through the attack:

This video has been viewed by untold millions and is now in the Smithsonian.
The video includes the planes crashing into the buildings and victims jumping. There are pictures of many of those who lost their lives, and president Bushs aftermath speech set to the haunting background music, Only Time by Anya. Awesome.
.
This family will never forget as our Grand Daughter was born 9/11/84 and her Brother was born 9/11/88 and we had a big party planned that was disrupted by a group of crazed mad dog Muslims sent by the devil to kill over 3000 mostly American citizens. Our kids are grown productive members of our community and a joy to be with but their upcoming birthday is celebrated as a observance of that day in NYC...
I will also watch this documentary, the only one that includes the original image of the first jetliner striking Tower 1, and the only footage from within the tower as it collapsed. It will break your heart.
The documentary is also available from Netflix. Search for 9/11.

Obama’s Plan to Desecrate 9/11 By Matthew Vadum on 8.24.09 @ 6:08AM
SNIPPET: “The Obama White House is behind a cynical, coldly calculated political effort to erase the meaning of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from the American psyche and convert Sept. 11 into a day of leftist celebration and statist idolatry.”
SNIPPET: “The president signed into law a measure in April that designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service, but it’s not likely many lawmakers thought this meant that day was going to be turned into a celebration of ethanol, carbon emission controls, and radical community organizing.
The administration’s plans were outlined in an Aug. 11 White House-sponsored teleconference call run by Obama ally Lennox Yearwood, president of the Hip Hop Caucus, and Liv Havstad, the group’s senior vice president of strategic partnerships and programs.”
