LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Firefighters tried Monday to hold back a massive wildfire from consuming thousands of Los Angeles-area homes and a crucial communications center as they mourned two firefighters killed when their vehicle rolled down a mountain.

About 12,000 homes, as well as communications and astronomy centers atop Mount Wilson, were threatened by fire. At least 6,600 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders Sunday night and over 2,500 firefighters were battling the flames. On the blaze's northwestern front, two firefighters were killed Sunday on Mount Gleason near the city of Acton.

Please correct the name of the link.

It should read Orange County Register.

Sorry, I’m a little upset here.

Not to appear insensitive but this seems to be a story line we see each and every year at about this time. Has there been any talk as to how these sorts of fires can be prevented or at least their scope diminished?

Get back to me on another day

We're a little too busy fighting fires, today.

In the meantime, try praying for the Firefighters and those whose homes are in danger.

It’s a desert, there’s not a lot to do. Metal roofs, brush control, even then...

It gets complicated. You've got communities and neighborhoods growing into the woods. When the inevitable fire comes, instead of just burning some countryside and killing a few rabbits you've got houses burning. Firefighters are then tasked with saving property rather than building fire breaks and letting the fire consume itself. Compound that with the enviros that won't allow brush clearing or other common sense fire abatement measures and that's why this scenario plays out year after year across the West.

I don’t understand why the enviros have this law, it seems counter productive.

Yep, it's called brush clearing. Last I knew, it was still illegal in CA.

After a devastating fire in Yosemite Valley some years back, the state of California began brush clearance operations in that area with a vengeance. I've driven through Yosemite in the summer, and have seen mile after mile after mile of baled forest litter along the highways.

Okay, for the LAST TIME AFTER TWO DAYS OF REPEATING THE FACT.

THIS AREA IS THE ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST...

THE OPERATIVE WORD IS “NATIONAL” WHICH MEANS IT IS FEDERAL LAND.

CALIFORNIANS HAVE NO CONTROL OVER FEDERAL LANDS.

GET IT?

SHEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Now, if you want to do something "constructive" ;come our here and help us fight the fires on FEDERAL LAND or at least pray!

Seems as if Mother Nature is unaware of the law since she appears to be taking care of the brush clearing in her own way.

yeah, but isn't it still illegal for homeowners to take care of it themselves?

I only ask out of ignorance, and the fact that when I found it was illegal, my first reaction was "So What?".

When it comes to obeying a law that's likely unenforceable, and saving my house from burning flat, that's an easy choice.
