CBS/SHOWTIME AIRS NAZI-LIKE ASSAULT
Catholic League ^ | August 28, 2009 | Bill Donohue

Posted on 08/31/2009 4:09:22 PM PDT by Mrs. Frogjerk

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on last night’s edition of Penn & Teller’s show. The program aired on Showtime which is owned by CBS:

The Nazis couldn’t have done better. Having been in this job for over 16 years, I have never seen a more defamatory, obscene and vicious show on TV. And I mean about any religious or demographic group—not just Catholics. The lies about the Catholic Church, to say nothing of the vile language used by Penn Jillette, were positively astounding. Moreover, it never attempted to be comedic—from the very beginning it advertised the show as payback for 2,000 years of alleged crimes. This was Julius Streicher back from the grave.

In this half-hour show, the Catholic Church was blamed for every evil in history. Jillette said the “intolerance, greed, paranoia, hypocrisy and callous disregard for human suffering” was the hallmark of the Catholic Church. Others on the show branded the Church an “amoral” and “power hungry” institution that is just worried about its “cash flow.”

Jillette lied about the Vatican’s reaction to Sabina Guzzanti, an Italian foul-mouthed comedian who staged an assault on the pope in 2008: the pope never sought to throw “her sexy ass in jail” and never once sought any punitive measure against her—it’s all a bald face lie! Jillette lied about a 1962 Vatican document—it was a statement about penalties for priests who used the confessional to solicit sex: it was not a cover-up for sexual misconduct! He lied about Pope Benedict XVI—he had absolutely nothing to do with overseeing cases of priestly sexual misconduct in the United States! And so on.

>>Perhaps I should blame all of the Protestant church’s for their shortcomings.

Go ahead. <<

Why? What good does it do to beat on other Christians.
Sometimes I marvel at the Christians here that have to beat on other Christians to feel good or something.

Geez oh Pete, we’re on the same side TigersEye. Let’s act like it.

>>Would I have liked the Pope to have said something, sure.<<

The Vatican did say something about it.
So did many Bishops.

No, Tigerseye does.
Sometimes one must stand one’s own beliefs.
Smacking other’s beliefs is not a part of that.

I see his three points now. I don’t know anything about those three stories and haven’t seen the P&J show in question so I can’t comment on that. My apologies for taking your post out of context.

I wasn't suggesting that he ought to beat up on Protestants. I was just telling him to follow through on his threat. It was somewhat sarcastic. Sorry.

I am talking about the concept of excommunication.

I underestimated my own ability to be under informed. I had thought for some long time that one can be excommunicated by the decree of a man, and that this was equivalent to spiritual condemnation.

I had a brief moment of sensibility and did a wiki look up, and it appears that excommunication (in the Catholic Church) has really nothing to do with eliminating the spiritual communion between God and one of His children. They may not be able to take communion at mass (but perhaps they could take communion elsewhere), but the actions of the church leader have no authority whatsoever on the relationship between the congregant and the Lord.

I felt like you deserved a response from me. I’m sorry it’s not a better informed one. Five minutes of internet research does not a theologian make. I will attempt to refrain from further Catholic editorializing until some future time when I actually know something about it.

My apologies.

Folks who think the Church is evil violent and oppressive have aparently never understood what happens under militant athiesm ( communism ) or the ancient pagan societies.

We have working models in regards to countries that have secularized themselves. And it isn’t pretty!

We are going down that path, and fast.

The people that run things in the Church are not perfect, however, the Church itself is! What it stands for is! To dismiss what is ultimately good because there have been some things that are negative is just wrong.

To choose not to believe is our choice. But if you choose not to believe, why attack the rest of us? Just leave us be. If you believe that the Curch is false, than why bother to take it down? If that was the case, than the Church will fall on it’s own. The fact that the Church has been around for thousands of years speaks volumes!
