I emailed our school's principal and asked if the school is participating in the President's address in any way, shape or form either live or by recording.

The principal said that she was aware of some classes participating.

I responded by asking which ones.

I await her response.

If my children's classes are involved what I will do is go to the school and provide an alternative lesson - such as one of the principles found in "The 5000 Year Leap".

I'll also consider calling the other parents in the class and let them know what's going on and they can act accordingly.

Gee, I travel to Santa Ana with my kids that day. We are visiting Judge Carter. Sorry they will miss your speech, O-surper.

Here is the body of letter [personal info redacted] I just dispatched to my own School District Superintendent and School Board Members:
Dear Doctor ______,

Barack Obama has announced that he wishes to address all school students on September 8th. It is reported that his staff has sent out letters to School Principals nationwide. They have prepared "educational" program material to go along with this.

Creepily and ominously the letter and the lesson plan material do NOT mention what the topic of the speech is to be. Yet the lesson plans make clear that Obama demands -- for to say that a man in such an office "strongly desires" something carries to the force of a strict command from regular folk. Barack Obama thus demands that the students should agree with what he says, find that it is important and act upon it.

My strong recommendation as a concerned citizen resident in this school district is that the district NOT participate in such an event, because the topic and subjects to be discussed are unknown.

For an everyday example we all know that as responsible adults it is unwise to allow oneself to be subjected to a sales pitch for time shares at some vacation resort or some multilevel marketing scheme. Why? Because as a captive audience it is tough not to have our minds stolen to some degree by the sales pitch or the con -- and let's face it, many of those things are cons.

If Mr. Obama wishes to address this group of our community let it be NOT as some captive audience. The children in a classroom or auditorium have no choice but to sit through such a speech. Nor is it wise or responsible for an adult in charge of such vulnerable young minds and spirits to allow anyone free access to them in a captive situation such as a classroom or auditorium without first reviewing and approving the lesson plan. A plan that MUST INCLUDE the subject to be discussed and what is to be discussed about it.

It is the absence of such statement from Obama about what he intends to discuss that makes this so creepy and ominous. That is why my subject line asked, "Is this dictatorial-like political indoctrination?"

See the Fox News report: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/02/critics-decry-obamas-lesson-plan-students/

I feel it is imperative that the responsible adults in charge of the student body of _________ School District do what is right in this case. And that is to not ever allow such a presentation no matter who asks to make it. Let them provide a video that may be reviewed for content first. And then decide if it is a worthwhile or good thing to do.

Please do not participate in this dictatorial indoctrination on September 8th. That is what it is at this point. Pure dictatorial political indoctrination.

It would be irresponsible to allow it, it would be a dereliction of your duty to the young charges who are your responsibility to protect and to build their intellects, spirits and morals.

Sincerely,
[name]
[town]

I guess your district left it up to the schools.

I called my district, and they said that they don’t believe that political or religious speech should be taught in school, so none of the schools in the district will be broadcasting his speech.

To all of you who have chided (or worse) me for my belief that the left has cooped education in this country, I rest my case. This is a blatant attempt my The Marxist Onada to indoctrinate our children. And all—which is to say most—or our leftist public schools will be fall all over themselves giving him a forum.

• Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions:

Who is the President of the United States?

What do you think it takes to be President?

Can a President be a Kenyan? (Answer this one wrong and your teacher has to give you a "F.")

Wrong.

Recently there was a quote (paraphrased) re: ‘Anything that happens in Washington was intended from the offset/beginning to do.’.

Many things have been set in motion ... that are later utilized in ways, that for all intents and purposes were not the original purpose.

For every legislation ... there is a purpose for possible good and a opening through for possible bad.

It is my opinion that there is a side of true consideration and well doing and a side of winning at any cost.

The well meaning side frequently is stymied and even diverted into evil by the career bureaucrats that are perpetually in office and are essentially communists and autocrats. A Republican President has to fight the embedded enemies. Reagan dd just that. It worked ... most of the time. Bus yielded on some issues badly. Mo.

Sad to say.

Reread Orwell's “1984”. Revisionist history, doublespeak, tyranny and fear, lies are truth, etc. etc.ect.

Evidently, a “test” video has already been released. Please see this story at wwweducationnews.org
http://www.ednews.org/articles/parents-upset-over-leftist-propaganda-video.html

“Parents upset over ‘leftist propaganda’ video
Written By: Salt Lake Tribune 2-9-09 Categorized in: EducationNews Today, K-12 Parents upset over ‘leftist propaganda’ video

A school principal has apologized for showing a video at an assembly that a politically conservative group leader is calling “radical, leftist propaganda.

Children at Eagle Bay Elementary School in Farmington were shown a short video called “I pledge” on Aug. 28. The video opens with an image of President Barack Obama and part of a speech in which he says, “Let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.” The video then features celebrities making pledges about how they will help the president and the world — and that’s where some say the problem lies.

Many pledges, such as supporting local food banks, smiling more, and caring for the elderly are noncontroversial. But other pledges, such as “to never give anyone the finger when I’m driving again,” “to sell my obnoxious car and buy a hybrid” and to advance stem cell research cross the line, some say.

“Showing the video in a public school is completely inappropriate,” said Jennifer Cieslewicz, whose daughter is a first-grader at the school. “I don’t believe a video such as this that promotes certain values should be shown to elementary students, especially without parents being aware. “

Chris Williams, Davis School District spokesman, said school principal Ofelia Wade and school PTA leaders decided to show the video as part of an assembly about the school’s theme for the year, service. He said the PTA board chose the video and Wade did not see it before it was shown in the assembly.

“It got to a point where she turned to her assistant and said, ‘Oops, I wish I would have seen this before. I don’t think I would have shown it,’ “ Williams said. He said Wade could see how some adults might find the video political.

“She acknowledges she was wrong and apologizes for it and says she’s sorry,” Williams said. Attempts to reach school PTA leaders Tuesday evening were unsuccessful.

Williams said Wade plans to send a letter home to parents Wednesday about the issue.

Gayle Ruzicka, president of conservative Utah Eagle Forum, said the video was blatantly political. She said other offensive pledges included, “I pledge to be of service to Barack Obama,” “I pledge allegiance to the funk, to the united funk of funkadelica,” and pledges to not use plastic grocery bags and not flush the toilet after urinating.

“It’s very inappropriate to show a radical, leftist propaganda piece that political to children,” Ruzicka said. “If parents want their children to learn about those things and do them in the home, wonderful, fine, but it’s not the place of the school to show a one-sided propaganda piece to children without parents knowing about it.”

Cieslewicz said such values should be decided in the home, not at school.

“They shouldn’t be troubling our youth with the woes of the world and making them feel like we’re in slavery or they have to worry about how many times they flush the toilet or if they have a plastic water bottle,” Cieslewicz said, referring to pledges in the video to “end slavery.”

Ruzicka said she contacted local media about the video after receiving complaints from several parents. Ruzicka said she worried the video’s messages would confuse children whose parents might choose to use plastic bags when shopping or who want their children to flush the toilet after every use. Also she said she didn’t like a pledge “to be of service to Barack Obama” as he is here to serve Americans, not the other way around.

Ruzicka said she’d like to see the school district send a link to the video to all parents before an upcoming back-to-school night so they can voice their opinions and discuss it with their children. Williams said it’s unlikely the district will send out a link, but parents are welcome to access the video on YouTube.”

The first time that I went to the U.S. Dept. of Education webstite to check more on the story, when I copied and tried to paste the link to another post, I received a message that said “Will you allow this computer to access your clipboard?”...I thought that was unusual. I clicked “no”. http://www.ed.gov/index.jhtml
Arne Duncan’s letter to the principals is the lead story. I wonder if they also contacted school administrators to ask permission?

“”The issue that troubles me the most is that the NEA was set up to promote the arts,” he said. “If you have a meeting where you're trying to set up a machine that does your bidding, a propaganda machine, that's not what the National Endowment for Arts is for.””
__________________________________________________________

Sorry. I was responding to post #11

To use the ‘Program for the Arts’ is exactly why they like having these programs funded and created by the government; and at he ready so to speak.

Whenever it suits them, ... they (government) uses it as an arm for the Liberals actions. Why do they use it?

Because they can. and because it comes in under the guise of “the arts” which works to camouflage it ... so that all and all many are unsuspecting and do not NOTICE their actions/plans.

You get the idea. Sorry to be obtuse.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

I presume that the instructions tell the kids to then stamp and mail the letters to themselves, as a way of pulling the Postal Service up out of their current troubles?
