I begin with the young. We older ones are used up but my magnificent youngsters! Are there finer ones anywhere in the world? Look at all these men and boys! What material! With you and I, we can make a new world. - Obama?

They should at least allow Glenn Beck or Mark Levin to give a rebuttal.

In just a couple of hours my son is withdrawing from his public high school. Online home school is all set and ready to go. The relief of being completely out of the public school system is immense!

The strange thing is that Obama is not waiting until all kids are back in class. I know that LAUSD (the first or second largest district in the US) are not back to class until 9/9.

To: Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

Giving an speech to PreK -6th grade, Nationally on Tuesday Sept 8th (and I read recast on the 9th, but unconfirmed)...teachers are to read books and ‘soften’ them up prior to the speech. And the students are to answer questions, such as ‘How can I help the President?’ !! ‘What does he want from me’ ? !!, ‘What is he asking me to do’? !!
Now of course the ‘main stream media’ will claim he is not indoctrinating the young children of America. But Obama’s administration has already said ‘get em while they are young’.!

NO, Not just no, H*ll NO we will not tolerate this!

I have kids, they don't go to government schools.

They don't hear about having two daddies, how to enjoy masturbation, or how to "help" the president with his disguised partisan goals.

That is a good idea
It would be simple and easy to record and make it voluntary as long as they also notify the parents.

Call your school district. The school had no idea what I was talking about.

I know you are doing the right thing. Was this the last straw? I have been mulling this forever but I dont know if I can do it. My head and heart are coming closer to a decision however.

In the recent past, when the POTUS addressed the nation, the opposing party was given equal time e.g. State of the Union, weekly radio talks etc. Let’s request equal time. Suggesting Sarah Palin might just shake them up a bit.

Boycott the public schools.

The teachers unions run the schools and support Obama.

Isn’t the address to school kids from K-6?

If it is to all kids in public school, the way I’m handling it is I’m having a discussion with my 13 yr. old first. Of course I’ve already raised him to question everything and think about it make sure it makes sense before believing it.

The reason I’m not calling the school is because I think that the office of president deserves respect, even though Obama himself does not. It’s better to let him speak and then discuss the veracity of what he says. I want my son know the difference been respect for the basic institutions of our government and blind loyalty to individuals. This point is very important because government is about we the people and not an individual.

Absolutely! Call the principal. Then take your kids to play golf on Sept. 8th. On the required note explaining the cause of absence, just tell the principal your son/daughter had to work on their short game!

Nope, here’s the menu for grade 7-12

Grades 7-12 Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama’s Address to Students Across America
Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education
September 8, 2009

Before the Speech:
• Quick Write or Think/Pair/Share (Students spend a few minutes Thinking and writing about the question; Paired with another student to discuss, then Sharing their ideas with the class as a whole). What do we associate with the words responsibility, persistence, and goals? How would we define each term? A teacher might create a web of student ideas for each of the words.
• Quick Write or Brainstorm: What are your strengths? At what are you successful as a person/student? What makes you successful at these efforts? List at least three things you are successful at and why you feel successful with these tasks.
• Short readings. Notable quotes excerpted (and posted in large print on board) from President Obama’s speeches about education. Teacher might ask students to think alone, compare ideas with a partner, and share their collaborations with the class (Think/Pair/Share) about the following: What are our interpretations of these excerpts? Based on these excerpts, what can we infer the President believes is important to be successful educationally?
• Brainstorm or Concept Web: Why does President Obama want to speak with us today? How will he inspire us? How will he challenge us? What might he say?
• Brainstorm or Concept Web: What other historic moments do you remember when the President spoke to the nation? What was the impact? Students could create a Cause/Effect graphic organizer.

During the Speech:
• Listening with a purpose: personal responsibility, goals, persistence. Teachers might ask pairs of students to create a word bank from the web of any one of the terms (personal responsibility, goals, or persistence) at the top of a double-column style notes page. On the right-hand side, students could take notes while President Obama talks about personal responsibility, or goals, or persistence, trying to capture direct quotations. At the end of the speech, students could then write the corresponding terms from the word bank in the left hand column, to increase retention and deepen their understanding of an important aspect of the speech.
• Listening with a purpose: Inspiration and Challenges. Using a similar double-column style notes page as the one above, the teacher could focus students on quotations that either propose a specific challenge to them or inspire them in some meaningful way. Students could do this individually, in pairs or groups.

Transition/Quick Review: Teachers could ask students to look over the notes and collaborate in pairs or small groups. What more could we add to our notes? Teachers might circulate and ask students questions such as: What are the most important words in the speech? What title would you give it? What’s the thesis?

After the Speech:
Guided Discussion:
• What resonated with you from President Obama’s speech? What lines/phrases do you remember?

Don’t do it for something POLITICAL, do it for the child. Statistics show he has a much better chance at a good education with a non-government school or even the school in your home. Our founding fathers were homeschooled and their abilities rival almost anyone alive in comparison.

I just called the Board of Education and spoke with the Superintendant at the school my grandchildren attend. She didn’t know a thing about it! (She claimed)...If this is true, how could she not know? Are only ‘specific’ schools being instructed to do this? Anyone?
I did inform her, she might as well expect many absences on Tuesday and if the recast is on Wednesday, absences for both days.!

I’ve emailed my district board member. He is a nice guy and graduated from West Point. I don’t think he’ll think it is a good idea so hopefully the powers at be will kabosh this broadcast in our district and we’re a pretty RED state to boot.
