Grinched!: No Tree at Lincoln Center This Christmas (Annual Tradition Comes to End)
NBC New York ^ | 9/3/09

Posted on 09/03/2009 6:50:18 PM PDT by nickcarraway

The economy is putting a squeeze on the nation's biggest arts complex. The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is canceling its holiday tree lighting ceremony in December.

The decorated tree erected in the center's main plaza has become an annual tradition, with a live televised ceremony drawing both New Yorkers and tourists.

Lincoln Center blames the cancellation on what it calls "the challenging economic climate" -- and also construction at the entrance to the plaza.

“[Construction] will be completed by next year, but it is in no shape to hold the group that the tree attracts," Kate Merlino, a spokeswoman for Lincoln Center, told the New York Times. She said the tree would be back in 2010. The Manhattan arts complex spends millions of dollars on single opera productions, in addition to symphony concerts, theater and dance.

Maybe Lincoln Center could be arm-twisted to do something a bit smaller scale, say, for kwanza.... or something for mohammad, pbuh. Perhaps -12bama could say something low key, something that puts the icing on after his oratory to school kids everywhere. No reason to do something “overblown” for Christmas.

Lincoln Center blames the cancellation on what it calls "the challenging economic climate"...

So they're saying Christmas is canceled because of the Obama economy?

Wondering if The Won will decide to show his cost cutting prowess by trying to decorate the organic garden instead of killing a tree.

Their site rebuilding is taking two years instead of one.

So why not put up a tree OUTSIDE the center?

This better not be real! With all those Billions to spend, he can sure put up a Christmas tree, well of course unless it’s against his religion......eh?

No biggie. Everyone goes to see the one in Rockerfeller Center, anyway.

The one in Lincoln Center is for the Upper West Side snobs who couldn't actually go to midtown, unless it's to visit Saks (which is across the street).

BullStalin.

If they are hurting financially, they will lose out on revenue by this decision. It's cultural.
