How the dolphins being massacred to satisfy a food fetish are poisoning the Japanese who eat them
The Daily Mail ^ | 9/5/09 | Danny Penman

Posted on 09/05/2009 9:10:26 AM PDT by pleasenoobama

Within 12 months, the Japanese were killing more than 40,000 dolphins every year. Most were fed to children in school meals, with the rest being exported to China.

Ironically, recent scientific research suggests that the Japanese authorities might be endangering the health of their own children through this practice.

Dolphin meat is full of toxic mercury, cadmium, DDT and carcinogens such as dioxins and PCBs. Some cuts of dolphin meat have more than 5,000 times the safe level of mercury. Such levels can very quickly lead to severe nervous system problems and even insanity.

The dolphin meat is so toxic because the seas around Japan have become a soup of industrial wastes. These poisons become concentrated in fish, which the dolphins then eat. And when the Japanese eat the dolphins, they progressively poison themselves.

I don’t understand how eating the dolphin is different from eating a pig or cow.

The writer destroyed his own credibility when he mentioned DDT as a poison. ... The Russians tried to poison the Ukrainian leader Yushchenko with a megadose of it.

Exposures of thousands of times the “safe” limit can cause a type of acne.

I think you guys might be confusing DDT with dioxin.

Mahi-mahi is dolphin, the fish, and I do believe the article is talking about dolphin, the aquatic mammal.

Two different animals, literally.

Date on Minimata Disease is “1956” ~

Exactly. If you were right about the volcanoes, the disease would have been going on for "thousands of years".

It's clear there has been mercury pollution of the seas around Japan, and no doubt it is difficult, if not impossible to clean up.

Lucky Japanese. Tuna just doesn’t taste right since they took the dolphin out of it.

This ecologic environmental poisoning is EXACTLY what caused the birth of Godzilla!! It seems the Japanese should have learned their lesson after Tokyo got destroyed last time.

When I was a kid, one of the joys of summer was riding your bike in the “smoke” behind the mosquito truck spraying DDT.

Free Republic is not the place for animal rights activism, so stuff it.

Mahi-Mahi is often called “dolphin fish’” but is not actaully a dolphin or a mammal.

You scared me there, but I double checked again and it turns out that mahi-mahi is a fish not a mammal.

To all my critics who point to the differences between dolphin fish and dolphin mammal:

I am now and have long been aware of the two different genus and species.

But, believe it or not, many seafood restaurant patrons are not, enough so that the Hawaiian menu term was substituted years ago to prevent both anxiety and confusion when ordering.

Now it is reported that those cruel Japanese are knowingly eating Flipper.

Wasn’t the Bataan Death March enough to satisfy their sadistic appetites?

In fact, methylmercury from volcanic sources has been causing Minamata Disease for millions of years ~ check the site below for information regarding methylmercury and mercury poisoning ~ cleaning up industry isn’t the only thing that needs to be done ~ http://en.allexperts.com/e/m/me/methylmercury.htm

Your hyperbole is duly noted.

I fail to see how people eating meat somehow equates with our soldiers fighting a war as the TS states in their opening post.

That is garbage that does not advance the cause of conservatism.

It is in fact the liberal position for animal rights activist whackos to equate animal rights with the rights of human beings, so you can stuff it as well.

"Wasn’t the Bataan Death March enough to satisfy their sadistic appetites?"

===============================================

My Grandpa survived the Bataan Death March. For you to equate what he endured to people eating meat is about as stupid a thing I have ever seen of FR.

You dishonor the memory of our soldiers.

You stink.

You are 100% right.

Comparing Japanese WWII atrocities to eating dolphin meat is frivolous and disgusting.
