EATONTON, Ga. -- Authorities say an Augusta businessman killed himself after being chased by police in Putnam County. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says a deputy tried to pull Jay Weinberger over early Saturday morning because he was towing a trailer with an expired tag. Sills says Weinberger eventually pulled over but took off when the deputy approached his car.

The car left the road after a short distance, where the deputy found Weinberger dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sills says the trailer was stolen and police later found several other stolen trailers in Weinberger's possession.

Sounds like he was more of a criminal than a businessman.

Hey, watch what you post. It is NOT his responsibility. The economy caused his problems. If liberals can make such outrageous claims, so can I.

I’d look for a meth lab connection here. I know a man who had two enclosed race-car trailers stolen recently. The police told him meth cookers take them out way in the woods and set up shop. After a number of batches, the trailers become so toxic that they have to be abandoned, and another one is stolen to replace it. Furniture sales were probably slow so a “secondary business” may have looked appealing.

Sounds like he was more of a criminal than a businessman.

Or that he had a serious trailer fetish.

Actions have consequences. obama was put in power by people, not Americans, but by amd large, people mostly White that live in the United States. Along with a little fraud, but none-the-less, there were more counted votes for him than they were for Mc Cain. Now the events that people who are against obama warned about are happening, the people are crying.

Well, you reap what you sow. You don’t plant a turnip seed and get a collard.

And for the benefit of those who voted for “change “, before this is over they will get a bellyful.

The elderly who voted for “change” expecting to get free “health care” and free money have now learned that he plans on killing them and taxing them until they have no money . The old fools on Social Security who voted for “change” in the form of higher Social Security checks have found out that they will not get a COLA in 2010 and 2012 and when obama’s “health care” bill is signed into law, they will see their medi care assessment tripple for the forst year and double every year after that.

Every dark cloud has a silver lining, right? And this silver lining is the mid term election, correct? Don’t count on it. ACORN received billions of dollars with one and one goalonly. To keep Democrats in power. In addition to that , by time the 2010 elections are held obama will have his security force[read private army] up and running. These individuals will make the members of Germany’s National Socialists Workers Party look like sunday school children.

It will not be changed through the courts. They own the courts. It will not be changed via the voting process. By 2010 they will own the voting process. It will not be changed through the media. They own the media. It will not be changed by the Republican Party. The Republican Party is part of the problem and has morphed into the Democrat lite PartyIt will only be changed through the shedding of blood from Patroits fighting for their freedmom and the freediom of their children.

Anyway it is honestly analyzed , the solution ends up at the same point:

We can either die fighting or allow them to imprison us and kill us at their leisure. Either way they intend to kill us.

Jay (l) & Mark Weinberger.

About Us

3rd Generation - Jay & Mark Weinberger Weinberger's Furniture Showcase has been a family tradition and an Augusta landmark for 71 years. Abe Fogel opened Augusta Furniture Market on Broad Street in 1932 and built the store into a symbol of good quality and personal service that has never wavered in seven decades.

A young Gene Weinberger came to work for him and eventually joined the family as well as the business. He came to take over the business from his father-in-law and grew the company for 50 years.

It was Gene who moved Augusta's leading furniture store from downtown to its current spacious location at 3137 Washington Road in 1976.

"I remember working for dad when I was about 10-years old," said Jay Weinberger, who with his brother Mark, bought the family business 12 years ago.

"I was sweeping the floor and cleaning the bathrooms," Jay remembered in fun recently. "Dad told me I had to start at the bottom and I said, "but dad, this is below the bottom!"

The two sons have come a long ways since their "bottom dwelling' days, building on their father's and grandfather's foundation to make Weinberger's Furniture Showcase the most recognized and respected furniture store in the entire region.

"We have the most experienced staff in the area, including four people with over 20 years experience in the furniture business," Jay said. "It's important to have an experienced person to help you visualize what will look best in your home."

Weinberger's has a wonderful selection of fine rugs, mirrors, lamps, art work, mattresses, recliners. Weinberger's has such an array of styles, from an exotic Roman-style leather chaise to fine traditional Southern style furniture to a striking tile topped modern table.

"Our philosophy for 70 years," Jay said, "is that we offer discount prices on quality name brand furniture. That is the way our grandfather and our father ran their businesses, and that is the way that my brother and I do business today."

A friend recently commented that with a bad economy, crime would increase. So I asked him, how broke would he need to be to become a thief and criminal. He was speechless.

Progress slow in Weinberger case
More trailers linked to dead businessman, sheriff says
By Billy W. Hobbs | Morris News Service
Monday, September 07, 2009

Putnam County authorities are still investigating what Sheriff Howard Sills has described as a bizarre case involving the weekend suicide of a well-known Augusta businessman.

Jay Robert Weinberger, who lived in Augusta and part-time at Lake Oconee in Greene County, was laid to rest in graveside services at Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta on Sunday. Mr. Weinberger was co-owner with his brother, Mark, of Weinberger’s Furniture and Mattress Showcase on Washington Road. The family also had a business by the same name at Lake Oconee in Greene County.

Contacted Sunday afternoon, Mark Weinberger said he wasn’t ready to comment on his brother’s death. He said the family had just returned from the funeral, and he agreed to make a statement later.

Sheriff Sills acknowledged in an interview Sunday that there are more questions than answers in the case. He indicated that his office hasn’t had much time to examine evidence because of the Labor Day weekend.

“We’ll begin looking at it closer on Tuesday,” Sheriff Sills said. “We’ll likely look into this man’s past a little closer, too, because of the circumstances. This is a very bizarre case.”

Sheriff Sills said Jay Weinberger refused to pull over for a traffic stop on Harmony Road in northern Putnam County about 4 a.m. Saturday.

“One of my deputies attempted to stop him by activating his blue lights and siren, but Mr. Weinberger wouldn’t pull over,” Sheriff Sills said.

Deputy John Saunders had noticed an expired tag on a white concession trailer being pulled by Mr. Weinberger. The pursuit continued for about three miles before Mr. Weinberger pulled over near the intersection with U.S. Highway 441, Sheriff Sills said.

As Deputy Saunders was preparing to get out of his car, the sheriff said, Mr. Weinberger’s pickup lunged forward and traveled erratically for about 75 yards before veering off the road and into a ditch. Sheriff Sills said he believes Mr. Weinberger shot himself when he stopped.

Mr. Weinberger, whose 47th birthday was Friday, was found slumped over in the driver’s seat of his Chevrolet Silverado, which still had a paper tag from Milton Ruben Chevrolet in Augusta. He was wearing a pair of red and black golf-style gloves and had a pair of bolt cutters and other tools in the cab of the truck, Sheriff Sills said.

The trailer Mr. Weinberger had been pulling was stolen, the sheriff said.

Two more trailers — one of them stolen in July from its owner in Putnam County — were discovered at the Weinbergers’ warehouse off River Watch Parkway on Saturday, authorities said.

“One of the trailers had no identifiers (serial numbers) on it,” Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Scott Peebles said.

He said the case is under the jurisdiction of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

“We’re only offering our assistance to them,” Lt. Peebles said.

Sheriff Sills said that at least a half-dozen trailers “are linked to Mr. Weinberger in some way.”

Steven Fishman, the owner of Sidney’s Department Store at 550 Broad St., said he was a good friend of Mr. Weinberger and has known him all of his life.

“It’s a tragedy for his family as well as the Jewish community. He was a very pleasant person, very benevolent, and the entire family has been very gracious,” Mr. Fishman said.

Like everyone who knew Mr. Weinberger, Mr. Fishman is looking for answers as to what happened.

“This is such a tragedy. No one knows where this is going, and no one could have possibly seen it coming. ... What’s wrong with this picture? He was a pillar of the community, and I think a lot of people would like to have answers,” he said.

Chronicle Staff Writers LaTina Emerson and Jonathan Overstreet contributed to this story.

The police told him meth cookers take them out way in the woods and set up shop.

A couple of years ago the local Meth Task Force here caught a guy who had made a mobile meth lab out of a delivery truck, similar to what UPS drives. I guess the guy figured he'd be less likely to get caught if he were mobile....
