While White House spokesman Robert Gibbs today refrained from telling reporters whether President Obama in his speech Wednesday night will set a deadline for passing health care reform, sources tell ABC News that in his private meeting with Democratic congressional leaders this afternoon the key word was urgency.
The president told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that it is important for them to pass health care reform bills soon, the sources said.
Both leaders told the president that despite the difficult rough and tumble of the legislative process in the last few weeks, they are optimistic that both the House and Senate can pass health care reform legislation.

The time for torches and pitchforks is approaching !
Yet no one at ABC bothers to ask how this went from “UNIVERSAL, SINGLE-PAYER CARE!”, to the “Public Option”, to “Insurance Reform”, to today’s “Healthcare Reform”.
Obama and the Dems have gotten themselves so deep in the hole over this that they are willing to pass ANYTHING now, and call it “VICTORY!!!”, even if it bears no resemblence to what they origionally wanted.
Reid & Pelosi trying to flush out the dissenters. Means nothing.
We will have to votes in 2010 though.
Why haven’t they just DONE it already instead of yakking, then.
There is no way they can have twisted the tails of enough Blue Dogs to make a public option a shoo-in.
Is this what O-Bowma is going to announce in his big speech...they are going to pass it w/ 51 votes in the Senate?
If the ‘rats try to shove National Socialist “Health Care” down our throats, God help this Republic.
Key word is “urgency”.
If anyone knows the real reason for this urgency- I would like to know. There are theories- if they don’t get it done now then we’re in the holidays and the new year and elections will be the focus- or they have to get it done now before we find out how bad the economy really is- and so forth.
Those reasons are sensible- but still...something about this whole urgency thing just baffles me. It makes me uneasy.
Today's just the first day back. I suspect this is smoke-'n-mirrors. The House/Senate are at opposite poles on this. Each one may have the votes for their own bills, but that's still far apart. Yet, I'm in the camp of those who believe they'll get this done. America won't like it, but they'll get it done. Be ready.
We better burn up the lines to our Representatives, don’t let up.
It’ll get upchucked before anything can actually get under way. They are talking about trying to do to the whole USA what Canadians are failing to do with a population that is smaller than California’s. The rest of the world is, in fact, getting very nervous at the impending loss of an escape valve for their failed socialist medical systems.
VOtes for a nuke option maybe...but Reid and Pelosi should be put on notice if they do go that route: Tarring and feathering will become en vogue once again.
It’s exactly the same tail on fire routine that characterized the early weeks of the Obamanation. Nobody should be fooled.
I hope so. But seeing the antagonism toward this bill from Americans of every stripe, I can't but suspect they'll try a Hail Mary play hoping they'll not lost control in the mid-terms. I'm not going to count that out.
They have to get it done by the middle of October or the Nuclear Option expires. That is their worry.
[sources tell ABC News that in his private meeting with Democratic congressional leaders this afternoon the key word was urgency. ]
Perhaps the word was incontinency, not urgency.
Here comes the shove down our throts.
They can throw 100 million dollars at each blue dog district and buy them off in a minute.
