Doctors told me it was against the rules to save my premature baby
UK Daily Mail ^ | 9/9/09 | Vanessa Allen

Doctors left a premature baby to die because he was born two days too early, his devastated mother claimed yesterday. Sarah Capewell begged them to save her tiny son, who was born just 21 weeks and five days into her pregnancy - almost four months early. They ignored her pleas and allegedly told her they were following national guidelines that babies born before 22 weeks should not be given medical treatment.

Miss Capewell, 23, said doctors refused to even see her son Jayden, who lived for almost two hours without any medical support. She said he was breathing unaided, had a strong heartbeat and was even moving his arms and legs, but medics refused to admit him to a special care baby unit.

Miss Capewell is now fighting for a review of the medical guidelines.

From the article

“But weeks before they were published in 2006, a child was born in the U.S. which proved a baby could survive at earlier than 22 weeks if it was given medical treatment.

Amillia Taylor was born in Florida on October 24, 2006, after just 21 weeks and six days in the womb. She celebrated her second birthday last year.

Doctors believed she was a week older and so gave her intensive care, but later admitted she would not have received treatment if they had known her true age.

Her birth also coincided with the debate in Britain over whether the abortion limit should be reduced.

Some argued that if a baby could survive at 22 weeks then the time limit on abortions should be reduced.”

“Probably not viable” should not be an excuse.

I have a son who starts 3rd Grade today. He was 3 weeks early - not 3 months... No problems, thank God, and he weighed enough, etc. to go home after 2 days. In fact his birth Apgar score was 9 of 10. But what if he had been very early?

I have a better question.....How do they sleep at night after that?

Bureaucrats in a Socialist government rarely have a conscience or soul. They just eat, sleep, and breathe sort of like a rat, or maybe even some sort of undefined vegetation...

Not just to them, but to all of us for letting it happen. I sometimes wish God would bring it on and destroy us all. We deserve it.

In a case like that, violence would be entirely justified against a doctor acting so barbarically. To the extent it takes to force him to treat the child. Too bad she was probably not in any condition dish it out.

And another concern, the 2 day margin is outside the margin of accuracy. Who’s to say their estimate of the infants age that accurate?

Form over substance. That’s the real problem with Western society. We refuse to face reality and keep doing the same thing, day after day after day even when it doesn’t work.

I am a man also.......

This happened before I was in the medical field......

And yes....our baby never cried, and didn't have a heart beat even before delivery. My wife had a nearly complete detached placenta.......

Thanks-

That is Britian. Anything that uses ammunition or is sharp is illegal.
But here... A husband with a certain type of weapon might be useful.

I also had a premature baby once. Thankfully, she lived and survived! She wasn’t too premature, just 6 weeks. She is now 32 years old! Ironic thing is: she was healthier as a premature infant, than she was at 28 years! I almost lost her twice! Once when she was nineteen, to Crohn’s disease, then at twenty-eight to complications of the same disease!

Needless to say, she survived all three instances, (including premature birth) and is still alive, and doing much better, for now! There are a few other close family members who have had near brushes with death too. I shudder to think what could happen to them if Obamacare goes through! Brrrr...

During 3rd year of medical school while rotating through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit rotation (only my 2nd clinical rotation up until that point), I participated in the birth of a pair of twins. One of the twins had severe malformations including microcephaly, meningomyelocele, cleft lip cleft palate, and a club foot. The couple chose to carry the pregnancy to full term in order to save the normal twin. Right after the delivery I was instructed by the chief resident to take the deformed twin into another room so as to not allow the parents to see him. As I held this beautiful child in my arms and gently rocked him, like I had my youngest sister and all of my nieces and nephew, I sang him a lullaby that mother used to sing. I then baptized him with the tap water from the faucet in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, knowing that his Muslim parents would not. With the stethescope hanging from my ears, I held this child until his last breath and heart beat faded. It saddened me that this baby died in the arms of a stranger and not his parents. His body was taken to the morgue without his parents ever seeing him. From then on, I vowed never again to let another newborn infant die on my watch without intervening.

Fast forward 20 yrs. later...Few months ago, my ER nurses and I successfully resuscitated a 21 weeker crack baby who was gray, ashen, pulseless and apneic when we delivered him. He's doing well, alive and growing without any deficits. Truly a miracle. We are a culture of life, and rationing of care is not why I went into medicine. We went all out to save this kid and our prayers were answered. What's a $2 million dollars hospital bill anyway in the grand scheme of things? Chump change compare to our federal deficits.

My grandson was born last summer with myelomeningocele (spina bifida). The large opening at his spine was surgically closed before he was 24 hours old. He has a shunt to alleviate hydrocephalus. He is a beautiful, smart, happy child. Yes, he has some physical challenges, but he doesn’t let them ruin his day.

Smile Train literature that comes in the mail shows that cleft lip/palate is surgically reparable. A child in my grandson’s NICU was being treated for clubfoot. Kristi Yamaguchi took up ice skating as therapy for clubfoot, and won a gold medal in skating (and mirror ball trophy in Dancing With The Stars).

I was uninformed about microcephaly, so Googled it. None of these children look like they should have been left to die:

I appreciate your dedication to preserving life.
The nurses where my grandson was born wished his deformity had been detected in utero, so he could have been aborted. The nurses at the NICU where he was transported were angels who gave him the best of care and encouraged my daughter. “Culture of life” explains the difference.

And *these* are the very same people (and bear in mind I'm using the term in its loosest sense) that decree others to be "useless eaters". The hypocrisy is breathtakingly stunning...
