President Barack Obama this week has been laying the foundation for Senate Democrats to use a controversial budget maneuver to pass healthcare reform.
By offering Republicans olive branches during his address to Congress on Wednesday, Obama has set up a win-win situation. If GOP lawmakers embrace compromise, a healthcare bill would pass Congress easily. But the more likely scenario is that Republicans will continue to oppose Obamas plan, and the president later this fall will be able to note he tried to strike a deal with the GOP but could not.
That will set up a Democratic argument that Senate leaders have been forced to use a partisan budget tool known as reconciliation to pass a health bill through the Senate by a simple majority, instead of 60 votes. Under the budget plan they passed earlier this year, Democrats could invoke the reconciliation process on Oct. 15.

Money is the mothers milk of politics. The best way to defeat death-care is to donate to the republican party in one way or another I’m afraid. The demoncrats will notice and they will be afraid. Ante up. Dollars are weapons now.
Oh please! Don’t throw the bill in that brierpatch!
I firmly believe there is something (National ID cards)for starters... in this stinking bill that 0bama needs desparately for the UN’s announcement of global economy. So he is not worried about re election. His bluedogs will have to take one for the team.
ObaMao himself said that there needs to be taxes on “unhealthy” lifestyles, habits, foods and behaviors.
And they will pass Crap & Tax under the same idealistic cause. It will be touted as being vital to producing revenue for the “Public Option”. It will also be claimed as the fastest way to make Americans “healthy” again.
This thing is a fast track Trojan Horse that will trigger ObaMao’s entire agenda of National Socialist Fascism.
Healthcare “Reform” is Lexington
Public Option is Concord
Reconciliation is the Bridge
Remember when we owned the white house, the senate and house? Could we get our judges in? No because the republicans are a bunch of P*ssys! The republicans are apology filled leaders. Sorry they got elected, Sorry they voted against democrats, Just Sorry.
Thank you for that------the thought of these turds operating inside our WH is nauseating. Rahm and Axelrod hatched Obama and are as shocked as anyone that this rooster actually won.
Opportunistic Rahm will use Obama like he uses everyone else... as a stepping-stone to more power and money. Obama was his ticket to untold riches.
These greedy turds have access to the US treasury, banks, auto companies and, trillions from the health care system. Rahm and his bro Dr Zeke will become billionaires. They are wire-transferring as we type.
Soon Rahm will move on........ as Americans cope with a bankrupt country.
===============================================
David Copperfield's ingratiating scoundrel fits Rahm to a tee. Uriah Heep was notorious for wielding undue influence, a manipulative bounder who was always planning and plotting, ingratiating himself into the confidence of others. Uriah Heep was obsequious, manipulative, and wormed his way into positions of influence. Uriah was a consummate con man, and not to be trusted.
Translated into the language of the popular culture, Uriah Heeps, like Rahm, position themselves as amenable to American values but are insincere in these public posturings; he uses important issues to advance his hidden agendas and political ambitions.
Like Uriah Heep, power-hungry Rahm feeds on others, and deploys self-serving strategies for his own self-absorbed purposes.
We conservatives are on to this. We see that Rahm evinces an utter contempt for our culture and is obsessed with party politics. Watch him speak---Rahm coyly speaks the language to appeal to American values, but he is not a true believer, he is a calculating conniver----a latter-day Uriah Heep.
Even though I agree thehill runs left. It seems like in overall contaxt of this article they exposed 0bama’s shady intentions with fluff.
My understanding is that if the proposed bill violates one of six possible conditions an objection can be raised. To overcome that objection requires 60 members to vote in favor, just the problem the Dems are trying to get around!
So there could be challenge after challenge and if the Dems still push it without a “sunset” provision then in ten years it goes away!
Thank you Sen. Byrd
“The republicans won’t have the gonads to do to the democrats what they do the republicans. If the Repubs ever get back into some sort of power, they will immediately start reaching across the aisle and trying to work together and including dems in key power positions. You almost have to respect the dems as power brokers because they go for the throat and do not let up till they get what they want. They are all a bunch of worthless politicians, for themselves and only themselves. The repubs will always get what they deserve due to their spineless actions. The problem is that we suffer with them.”
I’m not sure that is true. Remember, Republicans used reconciliation, aka the nuke option, ten times between 1994 and 2006. 10 times in 12 years is quite a precedent making the nuke option seem like ordinary methodology in the Senate.
I'm not sure what speech "The Hill" was listening to, but I surely didn't hear any olive branches in Wednesday's performance. If fact, the only branches I saw were the ones Obama used to forcefully and frequently jab into the eyes of the Republican caucus.
They're all "wee weed up", over at "The Hill".
I thought the very same thing until Wednesday night. In fact, I said so frequently on this very forum. But, to me, that speech on Wednesday was a big middle-finger to the GOP and a bold attempt to get as many of the 50 Senators he needs to pass his bill. And, when I say "his" bill, I don't mean the Senate bill, I mean a bill that's FAR more closely aligned to what's in the House bill.
I believe Obama, and the DNC leadership realize that even if they pass this with the "reconciliation" option and the popular revolt that will inspire, there's not much hope of the GOP taking back the Senate next year, and even if there was, Obama would just veto any changes that he signs into law this year. As each year passes, it will get progressively more difficult for the GOP to turn back the clock. Social Security is still here, some 70 years later - as is the profound Medicare expansion of the '60s.
BTTT.....
