With today the final day of the Legislature's session, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic legislative leaders are pushing hard for passage of a law that would require that 33 percent of the power used in California be from renewable energy sources by the end of 2020.
The main sticking point is over a bizarre proposal that all this power be generated in-state, even though California is fully integrated into a regional grid that helps keep reliability up and costs down.
Our concern is much broader, however. A strong case can be made that the state, the nation and the world need to shift to cleaner forms of energy to reduce the emissions that contribute to global warming. But what Schwarzenegger and company are doing could turn California's deep recession into an enduring depression.
Remember, Congress is expected to act in coming months on a similar mandate for future energy sources. The measure now being considered in Sacramento would almost certainly be much stronger than its likely parallel federal law. Because renewable energy costs are significantly greater, it would lock California's businesses into higher energy costs not borne by their economic rivals both in other states and other nations.
This would have an immediate, devastating effect on manufacturers for whom energy costs are an absolutely critical competitive factor. This pain soon would spread to all sectors of the state economy and lead to higher costs for housing, food and retail goods in general.
It makes far more sense for California to have the same renewable energy standard as the rest of the nation not one that is uniquely onerous to a state already suffering from record-high unemployment of 11.6 percent.
But then that wouldn't allow Schwarzenegger and such lawmakers as Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, to stake their claims as environmental visionaries.
We wish they would leave their ego out of this in favor of a common-sense approach. If not, 15 percent unemployment, here we come.
Nuclear
Do these imbeciles really think they are helping?
There are two ways to have CA’s energy usage be 33% renewable by 2020.
Increase the amount of energy obtained from renewable resources.
Decrease the amount of energy obtained from non-renewable resources.
I wonder which way they’ll spend their time? Will they try and legislate renewable energy into existence? Or will they legislate non-renewable energy out of existence.
Seems pretty obvious to me. I’m glad I don’t live in Cali.
We need to remember that you just can’t fix stupid. Amen..
UT actually makes some sense. A bit.
Should Californis decide to go it alone, I would consider to go off grid with solar and generator. I will not pay their inflated prices for electricity. It would be expensive but it would be my decision.
They got until 2020 to hope and pray someone invents a new way to produce clean power.
Yeah Conan. Lead them back to the Hyborian...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
*wipes eyes*
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
With all the oil that is available to them that they are not producing, which is their only real hope for recovery,(if they could get public sector unions under conrrol) this is is a truly insane idea and a road to complete bankruptcy.
Methane-derived hydrocarbons produced under upper-mantle conditions
As with all liberal visions, it was a miserable failure.
Welcome to Phase II of ignoring the universe and the marketplace.
A serious problem is that anti-discrimination laws require that about 2/3rds of a nuclear plant's highly paid employees be functional idiots of dubious loyalty to the USA.
Yes they do, and that is the problem.
They don't realize that California's issues are about to be compromised by multiple surrounding states new or revised RPS's. They aren't the only idiots pushing this stuff, they have just been able to ride a gravy train of "cheap" read subsidized excess juice from big dams out west primarily.
Competition up - prices up.
Desalinization plants and massive water pumps to quench the thirst of 50 million people alone take a lot of juice...
Electricity to your home or water in your tap anyone?
Freaking nitwits. Someday people will realize that the very infrastructure that keeps major metorpolitan areas in California alive are powered in a large way by coal fired power plants and nuclear plants.
Great. The sit-in-the-dark solution. Hope it’s cheap.
