Teachers want to warn pupils of patriotism 'peril'
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 12th September 2009 | Matthew Hickley

Three-quarters of teachers in Britain's schools believe they should warn pupils about the dangers of patriotism - which some regard as a form of 'brainwashing', researchers have found.

A nationwide study found the majority of teachers felt they should not be promoting the subject at all in the classroom, with some preferring to instruct their pupils in the benefits of 'universal brotherhood'.

And even those who felt positively about patriotism felt the need to qualify and tone down their support, stressing that they disliked 'jingoistic flag-waving'.

The findings are a blow for the Government after Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke out in favour of encouraging pupils to be patriotic, calling for 'Britishness' lessons to be part of the curriculum.

The study by the Institute of Education at the University of London surveyed teachers and pupils at 20 secondary schools, and found 74 per cent believed it was their duty to point out the danger of patriotic sentiments.

'Praising patriotism excludes non-British pupils,' one teacher told researchers.

'Patriotism about being British divides groups along racial lines, when we aim to bring pupils to an understanding of what makes us the same.' Other responses included:

'We shouldn't be promoting patriotism. We should be promoting universal brotherhood.'

'I think we should identify as humans.'

'I don't think you should be grooming children to be patriotic. That's as bad as telling everyone that they've got to be a certain religion - I am not going to brainwash anyone.'

I weep for my profession sometimes. I think my boys in Australia are being taught more love for Britain than Britons are from what this says.

'Praising patriotism excludes non-British pupils,' one teacher told researchers.

Non-British pupils are being provided an education in Britain and I think that's appropriate - but it is not appropriate if their presence comes to define what is taught. They need to adapt to and accept British ways, not vice versa.

'Patriotism about being British divides groups along racial lines, when we aim to bring pupils to an understanding of what makes us the same.'

How about acknowledging that British citizenship is open to people of all races, and if you want to be made the same while living in Britain, that's the path available to you. Citizenship is separate to and above race.

'We shouldn't be promoting patriotism. We should be promoting universal brotherhood.'

In theory, maybe, unfortunately though a large and significant number of our supposed brothers want to kill us. When they embrace universal brotherhood, I'm willing to meet them on those grounds, but they need to do it first, because I won't offer my hand in friendship to somebody who wants to take my head off.

'I think we should identify as humans.'

Sure, but if you need to be teaching that in schools, something is seriously wrong with certain people's perceptions. What are they identifying as now? Chipmunks?

'I don't think you should be grooming children to be patriotic. That's as bad as telling everyone that they've got to be a certain religion - I am not going to brainwash anyone.'

I've taught patriotism all my life. I've never had to brainwash anybody to do it.

But just for the record, doesn't Britain have a state religion? And isn't a daily act of worship meant to be part of British schooling already? I believe it is. If you want freedom of religion, fine, but then you've got other issues you should be addressing already.

Some in the US want to warn pupils of “teacher peril” that could be a form of brainwashing.

We in the U.S. can sympathize with the Brits. After all, we too put a fool in charge of the country and we, too, are paying a big price.

If the British children of the early 20th Century hadn't been taught British patriotism, they would currently be practicing German patriotism.

If you don't like telling people they have to be a certain religion, don't worry. The jihadists will do it for you in a few years.

Ah, the joys of multicult... where everyone’s culture should be promoted, praised and defended.... except one’s own.

‘universal brotherhood’

They see something warm ‘n fuzzy in this phrase.

I see lots of dead bodies.

This is scary stuff.

This is mouth-watering to the world’s tyrants.

One-world government is another hard-left ideal that will kill millions, if not billions. Perhaps that is the intent.

Britain is falling and we’re on the same track.

We had better pull our heads out of the sand and really fight these types or we’ll suffer their rule over us.

How many British soldiers are buried in France, Belguim, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and in countless other nations around the world in graves marked and unmarked in service of Britain?

The enemies of Britain know nothing about this universal brotherhood these morons speak of. Its amazing to me how the “enlightened” and “educated” amongst nations of the West have no concepts of an enemy and awake every morning looking in the mirror failing to understand they are as much an enemy of their nation than any Imperial Japanese or Nazi soldier could ever have been.

Liberals have the same attitude in this country....no flag-waving or symbolism of separation....

As Bob Dylan says,

"Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody."

They Brit educators don't want to pay homage to their heritage, the creator's of their civil society. They'd rather risk it all on an imaginary utopian brotherhood of man.

I figure they'll end up adrift, wondering where their soul is, and bobbing toward the totalitarian hell that awaits those who've been persuaded to forswear an honorable but imperfect past for an imaginary perfect future.

I’m not convinced that rag-heads are human...

And that is what it is...imaginary...human nature being what it is we will always have to separate ourselves from those who wish to do us harm...or do not choose to live the way that we do...and unless you eradicate free will and choice there will always be those who chose to harm others defy community...

'We shouldn't be promoting patriotism. We should be promoting universal brotherhood.'

If they did that in 1939 they(we) would all have to learn new languages and the Hebrew tongue would have been cut out completely.

none too surprising really - but no less infuriating. Much of the government sector especially education and the BBC has a goodly number of stark raving leftists who hate this country and everything it stands for. WRT brainwashing, they know all about that, pushing their agenda at every opportunity and being aided by the apathy of the masses.

These teachers want to substitute their brainwashing ideology for what they perceive as the state’s. Maybe the Brits are correct in believing that there isn’t anything in Britain worth dying for. If we knew in 1942 what we know today, I wonder if America would’ve saved Britain?

Darn straight. Its a bit late for Gordon Brown to be shouting the benefits of us “all being British”. He and the PC dolts who pass for the intelligensia in the Labour and Liberal establishment have been preaching division, devolution, and the benefits of individualism for decades. Given that kind of background, pro-Union sentiment in the UK is at an all time low.

What the proponents of Multiculturalism forget is that the Union allows individuality, but by promoting a higher concept of “Britishness” also subverts the deep tribal loyalties that stop us from trying to murder each other. There’s no problem if people are Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Manx, Christian, Muslim, Pagan, White, Black, socialist, capitalist, republican, loyalist, royalist, working-class, guardian readers or whatever, as long as they are primarily British. If that ever stops being true, there is going to be trouble.

How do the British think they are going to survive as a nation if they are going to teach this nonsense? I doubt that they will.

Great Britain reminds me of a decaying tooth, just a little bit of it evident above the gums.

The U.S. is a broken tooth, hurts like a banchee and causes it’s owner to be pissed off that something hasn’t been done about it yet.

Representatives in Washington, just keep your damned mouths shut today. For once listen real hard. People whose shoe laces you are unfit to tie, have something to say, and you damned well better get the message.
