Million American March 9/12/09

I just spend this lovely Sunday organizing and editing close to 500 photos from yesterday's historic march in DC. I am still inspired by the sheer joy expressed by the million marchers in DC.Can we say this is the Woodstock for conservatives? Absolutely. I'd even say if MLK were alive, he would be out marching to the Capitol with the people and give a rocking speech.

Several impressions I took home from the Rally:

A million plus attendees is my estimate of the crowd size. Compare the official crowd estimator from the 2009 Inauguration (fig. 1) to the screen cap taken of the crowds (fig. 2) yesterday. I will say there were more patriots yesterday than fans at the January 20th inauguration. Metro police say 1.2 million and they would know a thing or two about crowd counts.

El Marco posted some great photos that speak to the size of this crowd.

I traveled to DC via a chartered bus from West Chester - I have to give kudos to Paula Stiles for taking the initiative to organize this bus trip. I must admit that it was good to be on the bus instead of being thrown under the bus. Our group arrived at Union Station and Dee and myself made our way to Freedom Square where we came upon a massive amount of people:

For a moment or two, I didn't know where to start photographing. I got over that real quick and shot almost 500 photos on Saturday, not including video.

More of the story below the fold: Wading through the crowd, we found ourselves swept away by the mass movement of people marching to the Capitol:

99.9 percent of the signs were hand made and held proudly:

The mood of the crowd was that of sheer delight, as many of the participants have never participated in a public rally. Yet here they were in Washington DC, marching with a million fellow patriots to the front lawn of the Capitol Building. You could sense a carefree joy as the marchers realized they were making history and that they were not alone in their beliefs. Waves of rolling chants from the back of the line to the front energized the crowd and gave me goosebumps.

One detail I keep noticing as I walked along were that some of the marchers donned t-shirts signed with numerous names:

I spent today thinking about yesterday and it seemed the perfect name for this event was the “Million Amercian March.”

It was ultimately about America and Americans who don’t want to see liberty lost to an almighty government.

(I saw this posted on another board)

I have a good friend at work whose husband went to the Washington Tea Party this week-end. She told me that he was getting ready to head out to DC last week, and went to a local Dollar General to buy some American Flags. He ran into a couple of elderly ladies who wondered why he was buying those flags, and he told them where he was getting ready to head out to. One of the ladies was using a walker, and she began to cry, and the other one went to the back of the store where the flags were shelved, took all the remaining ones off the shelf, and went to the check-out line to buy them all and give them to him. The cashier also, upon hearing what my friend’s husband was doing, pitched in, and so those 3 people together bought out the store’s entire stock of American flags and gave them to my friend’s husband. He left, with the back of his pick-up filled up with American flags to take to Washington, purchased with the good will and strong sentiment of three utterly random American citizens. I am confident that every person at the event can be held to have represented at least 3 additional Americans, who could not be there.

This is a true story. I’m confident that it’s not unique among the stories of this Tea Party. It’s a story that Mr. Obama and his minions, and the Democrats in Congress, would do well to heed. I think the American people are not going to sit still for what they see coming. I wasn’t so sure about this a couple of months ago, but I’m seeing something surprising: The American people are not going to submit. God grant us all that they (we) never will.

Freedom Works part of the event is available on C-Span now.

Very powerful speeches. Dick Armey is still a sharp great American.

It means, don't tread on me, it was a call and symbol for the colonies to united or die in the face of tyranny.

I would like to see the type of display of the flags that we saw after September 11, 2001. There were flags everywhere, on cars, buildings and private homes.

This could be the symbol of those of us who were unable to make it to D.C. I just found my two flags that clip onto my car windows and I'm going back into post 9/11 mode.

We made world news with the flag display showing our solidarity then, and we can do it now to show our solidarity against the encroaching socialist government that is trying to take us over.

Do you have any photos of how clean it was afterward? Allegedly, there are photos of the same area being a sty of litter after the Obamanation inauguration.

The Colonials picked it as an emblem because rattlesnakes are generally harmless, inoffensive creatures—until trod upon.

Weren’t the liberal health care supporters suppose to hold a rally in the capitol today? I could have sworn I heard a democrat politician say they would hold a rally today.

A very impressive turnout, and inspiring ... but I'm not seeing 106 people in these photos and videos. I think tens of thousands is a good statement, which if you get TEN tens of thousands, means 100 thousand, and I think this is a generous estimate.

The photos around the pool show about 10 thousand, and the marchers over the length of Pennsylvania Avenue amount to maybe 30 thousand, based on areas derived from Google Earth, and a crowd density of 1 per meter2 ( which is very generous if you look at the march video. ) I'm certainly willing to double this. So, my praise and congratulations to all involved, but let's not get hysterical.
