RICHMOND, Va. - Republican and Democratic operatives say the National Rifle Association will endorse Republican Bob McDonnell for governor.
The gun rights group plans to announce its endorsement in a Monday afternoon conference call for reporters.
Operatives with knowledge of the NRA's decision confirmed the endorsement on the condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made.
Four years ago, the NRA endorsed Democrat R. Creigh Deeds over McDonnell in their race for attorney general.

Two of the best friends Californian gun owners have ever had are two extremely liberal Democrats; Rod Wright and Joe Baca. They both prevented a lot of mischief in Sacramento; especially in the dead of night when none of the antis thought anyone was watching.
Is McDonnell still ahead in this race? i would LOVE to see NJ and VA go R this cycle.
In 2005, Deeds couldnt stop cooing over the NRA endorsement: This was and is very, very important to me, Deeds gushed then of the endorsement.
Fast-forward to yesterday. You can imagine a heart-broken Deeds choking back the tears, attempting to brush-off the rejection, before storming-off to the bedroom when he says that the dastardly NRA is basically a Republican organization."
I bet the WaPoo supported Mr. Deeds in 2005 anyway.
By the way it's disgusting that the NRA did that in 2005. At worst they should have given a co-endorsement if they thought Deeds was really pro-gun too. I'm glad they have corrected their horrendous mistake.
The NRA does support Dems.
In 1998, the NRA endorsed Roy Barnes, Jim Hodges, and Don Sieglman. In 2000, the NRA endorsed Mike Easley. In 2004, the NRA backed Brad Carson over Tom Coburn, Harry Reid over the token GOP opposition, and Specter over Tommey.
And Baron Hill in 2008 over the slightly better on guns Mike Sodrel.
It’s always a mistake unless the democrat is actually demonstrated to be more pro-gun than the Republican like in the 1998 Indiana Senate race where the Republican was such a Brady-style gun-grabbing RINO that Bayh was actually a little better than him on the issue (though still bad). Their desire to be “bipartisan” is allowing them to be used by the democrats. Look at how fast Deeds went wobbly after VA Tech. And he’s trying to play both sides, please the NOVA moonbats without alienating his base of hickocrats who’d shoot him before giving up their rights. You can’t trust a rat.
