Mike Lupica: Shrill shouters betray post-9/11 promises to be best we can be (attacks Mark Levin)
New York Daily News ^ | Monday, September 14th 2009 | Mike Lupica, annoying sportswriter posing as a political commentator

Posted on 09/14/2009 5:48:08 PM PDT by presidio9

Across from the World Trade Center site there were more flowers than usual outside Engine 10, Ladder 10, the legendary New York firehouse known as Ten House. There are always more flowers, and signs, and photographs and flags, when there is another anniversary of Sept. 11.

So the FDNY Memorial Wall, stretching down Greenwich St., was alive with color and handmade art yesterday morning. A "Flag of Heroes," listing the names of emergency service personnel who gave their lives eight years ago, hung outside Ten House at the corner of Greenwich and Liberty.

There was a wreath for the Rev. Mychal Judge, sent by FDNY pipes and drums, and a sign halfway down the block that simply read, "8 years, just yesterday."

Derrick Johnson, in an orange hardhat, part of a skeleton crew working for FJC Security Services across the street, watched the solemn parade of people along the Memorial Wall, whose bas-relief sculpture so powerfully tells the story of Sept. 11, 2001.

"Been busier than usual around here the last few days, as you might expect," he said. "But it's always quiet on Sundays, just like church."

Johnson shook his head, kept his voice low, because of the sacred ground behind him and the scene in front of him, the line of people constant.

"Rest of the country, that's where all the yelling seems to be," he said. "Like to see them try it down here."

Out of this place, out of what happened on that day, was supposed to come the best of us, and not just because of the ones who died here, the firefighters remembered on the wall outside Ten House, those names on the Flag of Heroes.

We promised ourselves we were going to be a better city and a better country because of what happened. We told ourselves that we knew what really mattered now. In the aftermath of the worst day the city and the country had known, we promised to find the best in ourselves, and in each other.

And on this most recent anniversary of Sept. 11, the country seems as full of hate and noise as it has ever been. This is an America where Rep. Joe Wilson, whoever he is, thinks he can call the President of the United States a liar, Wilson talking to the President the way he would the help, or some waiter who was supposed to bring him another drink.

Wilson really did sound like somebody who had been on hold for an hour, waiting to scream about socialism to Rush.

But why wouldn't Wilson scream out the way he did? This is a time when a radio host like Mark Levin routinely refers to President Obama as "that jerk," all in the name of liberty, of course, and the fight against tyranny. Or maybe this all just comes out of a fury that there weren't enough screamers to keep the black guy from getting elected.

Lupica forgets so quickly that Obama came to Congress to justify his legislative program of the moment, but first he had to tell everybody else that they were liars.

One man, on the site, reminded him that he, Obama, was a liar.

I thought of Wilson at that moment as very much taking the place of the slave who rode beside the victorious general on his parade in Rome and reminded him that all fame was fleeting, and that all men were mortal.

Obama needs that ~ someone to take him down a notch. Else, he's going to get this country destroyed.

“Keep the black guy from getting elected”?

Once again, the racebaiters say that conservatives voted against Obama because of his skin color, and (by extension) that liberals voted for Obama because he is black.

Actually Obama is half white, but you get the point.

By saying this, Lupica is actually also saying that white liberals (like him) are self-loathers.

Is he a self-loather because he is not black?

I doubt that he would like that said about him.

No Mikey boy. It’s like this. They would be highly pissed off if they knew that Americans were bending over to the Islamofascists and the communists the way you and your comrades are.

I guess he’s trying to mimic the dummy over at msnbc. I pretty much stopped watching ESPN because of libs like him and others always mixing their politics with sports.

It has always baffled me that someone actually pays Lupica a salary for writing his weekly sack of garbage. He must be engaged to the newspaper owner’s son.

The Democrats are spending a lot of time time calling Wilson a racist and suggesting this sort of thing is unprecedented, because the know that sooner or later some responsible journalist will bother to use Google and learn that this is neither unprecedented nor the most outrageous act by a Democrat member of Congress from SC. In 1856 SC Senator Preston Smith Brooks beat Republican Senator Charles Sumner (MA) within an inch of his life for criticizing Franklin Pierce and those who sympathized with pro-slavery violence in Kansas. Sumner was unable to return to office for three years. Brooks, and fellow Democrat SC Senator Laurence Keitt (who prolonged the savage beating by holding off the other Senators with a pistol were "censured" and returned to work the next day.

Wondering where Lupica was when all his Democrat heros were lined up to keep the black man from getting appointed to the Supreme Court.

Actually, he wrote about that not so long ago, and he indicated that anybody who does not believe Anita Hill by now is obviously a racist.
