Does racism drive anti-Obama protests?

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A southern conservative lawmaker breaks decorum and hollers "You Lie," at the president in Congress. Protesters display guns at venues where the president is speaking. And a movement arises alleging that the president's birth certificate is forged.

To some, it is clear that the burgeoning opposition to President Barack Obama is rooted in racism, driven by whites' discomfort with the fact that the United States is now led by an African-American president.

A series of Democratic lawmakers and political columnists have pointed to the trends -- the heckling, the gun-toting, the preachers leading congregations in prayers that Obama will die -- and warned of the danger therein.

...

To New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, the South Carolina Republican's cry of "You lie!" showed that Obama is "at the center of a period of racial turbulence sparked by his ascension," she wrote.

"This president is the ultimate civil rights figure -- a black man whose legitimacy is constantly challenged by a loco fringe."

Searching for the root of angry outbursts by white, middle-aged to elderly Americans at lawmakers' town hall meetings on health care reform over the summer, Democratic Congressman Charles Rangel also pointed to racism.

"Some Americans have not gotten over the fact that Obama is president of the United States. They go to sleep wondering, 'How did this happen?'" said Rangel earlier this month. Other black Democratic lawmakers have concurred.

But to Obama opponents, whenever a Democrat cries "racist," it is nothing more than a political ploy to muffle dissent.

"It is an intimidation tactic. When you make that attack and call someone racist or homophobic it is a way to kind of silence them," said Brendan Steinhauser, grassroots coordinator for FreedomWorks which organized the first large-scale protest against Obama in Washington over the weekend.

If I have to wait in a line or am not served first in a cafe or can’t find a parking place or the check-out takes someone in front of me at the grocery store or my mail gets lost......I just say, must be racism...(or Bush’s fault).

Yet another leftist gets the message that this is “racism week”, so they should all call conservatives and Republicans “racists”. This is so disgustingly cynical that it would be worth doing a Lexus-Nexus search, so that every one of these “commentators” could be put on a big list of “biased political tools”.

They shouldn’t mind any perceived loss of credibility. They kissed off any credibility they had when they sold themselves into slavery.

I don't respond to ad hominems and other red herrings.

Why don't we let the Hussein idiots hurl labels and epithets, and we'll discuss the arrogant criminal behaviors of czars, ACORN and the criminal Congress... of all colors?

Obama’s picture is on my dart board in my rec room and I’ve yet to hear any racist remark when my friends are over & playing darts. All I ever hear are cheers and celebration of throwing accuracy when someone hits the high score section. Now how is that racist. What should they do when they throw a high score, cry?
