Pause in Arctic's melting trend
BBC News ^ | 9/17/09 | BBC

This summer's melt of Arctic sea ice has not been as profound as in the last two years, scientists said as the ice began its annual Autumn recovery.

At its smallest extent this summer, on 12 September, the ice covered 5.10 million sq km (1.97 million sq miles).

This was larger than the minima seen in the last two years, and leaves 2007's record low of 4.1 million sq km (1.6 million sq miles) intact.

But scientists note the long-term trend is still downwards.

Arctic temperatures have been cooler this year than last year, researchers said, and winds have helped to disperse the sea ice across the region.

The data is compiled from satellite data at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado.

Maybe the volcano under the north pole has calmed down.

Arctic sea ice melt still heavy, but no record
AP

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090917/ap_on_sc/us_sci_sea_ice

WASHINGTON – The summer melt of Arctic sea ice wasn’t quite as bad this year as the last two years. But it still ranked as the third biggest melt on record.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center announced Thursday that the Arctic sea ice reached its annual low last week. Ice extended just shy of 2 million square miles. That’s 620,000 square miles less than the 30-year average.

But there was more ice this September than the record low set in 2007 — about one-third of a million square miles more. Last year ranked No. 2.

You can't tell if it is a pause, an end or a reversal until after many years. The fact that they automatically used pause shows that they are biased in favor of reporting global warming.

Arctic sea ice reaches annual minimum

Arctic sea ice appears to have reached its lowest extent for 2009. This year’s minimum is the third-lowest extent since the start of satellite measurements in 1979.

Good job RobRoy.
Volcano’s under it north ice cap just may contribute to that little ice melt thing but hey. That isn’t the company line, it’s global warming.
These clods haven’t a clue.

Yup, the Living Planet just doing its thing.

Heck, we got 6 volcanos going off in Kamchatka to boot.

Well, speaking as a guy with a garden located about 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle, I can’t wait for the onset of global warming. Our last frost this year was on June 4; our first frost of the fall was on Aug. 20. Some additonal growing season might just help out there. More browse for the moose would be a good thing, too - an increase in habitat as well, and since salmon live all the way down to northern California, I don’t think they’ll vanish any time soon - although some nice silvers for those folks on the north slope.

Peta has saved so many baby seals that their little furry coats are shielding the ice from the sun.

Perhaps you are right. But I still can’t get past the ice cores that predict that ever 125/50 thousand years we go into a cold cycle, like ice age. Right now we are on the edge (big edge)of the cold cycle beginning.

No it isn’t .... Global warming CAUSES global cooling.

It is a simple concept, ya know? All those ice cubes melting up there made the whole thing colder~!

But scientists note the long-term trend is still downwards.

Interesting how supposed scientists can talk about a long term trend when they have a whopping 30 years of data for an earth that they claim to be 4.5 billion years old.

This climate change began on July 3, 2008, if you recall that was “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”
