Paglia: ‘Birthers’ Aren’t Racist, and They Have a Point
Washington Independent ^ | 9-17-09 | David Weigel

Posted on 09/17/2009 4:11:30 PM PDT by STARWISE

Camille Paglia, the lone Salon.com columnist who can count on her ramblings getting regular links from The Drudge Report, appeared on NPR’s “On Point” yesterday and made a spirited defense of the “birther” movement.

The exchange came about 36 minutes in, after one caller to the show recounted his experiences at the 9/12 march on Washington. Paglia snapped back at him:

First of all, I reject the idea that the “birther” campaign is motivated by racism. There may be racism among it, but there are legitimate questions about the documentation of Obama’s birth certificate. I’m sorry, I’ve been following this closely from the start. To assume that all those signs about the birth controversy were motivated by racism, that is simply wrong.

Paglia has been on this beat before, writing in April that “there were ambiguities about Obama’s birth certificate that have never been satisfactorily resolved.”

But this particular interview is compelling, especially for Paglia’s convoluted explanation that she despises victim politics but thinks “The Sopranos” was a bigoted portrayal of Italian-Americans.

I do have to admit that Camille Paglia is an intellectually honest liberal in many respects.

I agree — and she’s a very entertaining writer, as well.

Well, it is perfectly clear that the COLB put out by Mr. Obama is ambiguous. Three of my children were born in West Germany (as it was then)and the most definite statement of their birth are the birth certificates issued by the German government. The State Department document is basically a COLB.

I agree! She’s amazing.
I taught literature, and one of her quick lectures about the declining interest in the liberal arts was a source of much material for me in class. She was hysterical when when she wrote a critical commentary about John Edwards confronting Vice President Cheney about his daughter and the gay marriage issue. She of all people! She really thinks.

“there were ambiguities about Obama’s birth certificate that have never been satisfactorily resolved.”

They were solved for me when I saw a very clear photocopy of Obama's Kenyan birth certificate in a widely circulated, yet widely ignored, email.

Paglia, though not agreeing with Gov. Palin’s political stances, wrote very defendingly of her; of her education (as an educator she respects working adults struggling to get a degree; and she does not hold Ivy League schools as the ‘optimum’ in education); her speech pattern (again ripping the Ivy’s elitists a new one); Camille was quite strident in those ‘looking down’ upon Palin.

Paglia also has written (eloquently) about the decline of the ‘trades’ and the push for all to have a four college degree (to sit in a cubicle). One of her articles was spot on about how boys and girls are ‘wired’ differently and that as an academic she abhorred (or equally strong language) the feminizing of young boys in public schools.

I look forward to her columns in Salon. She is so clear headed and well informed—yet politically different. Hard to explain, but I respect her and her talents immensely.

Well, if people were HONEST with themselves, they would recognize it too. You don’t go to numerous courts and say “Your honor, there is no need to present a measly little document that the average American needs to be able to drive in this country to be President. This document has been presented online!”. Ridiculous.

For the umpteenth time, I am telling you that I intend to go to the DMV and request a drivers license that I ‘lost’. When they ask for proof of who I am, I will hand them a sheet of paper with a website URL on it and tell them if it’s good enough for the President, it’s good enough for me.

I’m sure I will get a “You ain’t the President” response, but the point will be made. Now can James O’Keefe tell me where to get a nifty undercover camera?

Camille is the most brilliant female writer of our time.

The wit, the grace, the humor, the candor...she has it all.

One of my main disagreements with Paglia is her calling for the age of consent to be lowered. Ever notice that it's only the old geezers who want that?! I don't see any young people asking for that.

However, I do enjoy reading her column. She seems to be the only Lib who *gets* it.

I like your imagination and hope it is contagious. The court system isn't getting very far, at least not yet, but the court of public opinion is ready, willing and able to give obama his long overdue vetting.

Despite what the naysayers would have us believe, obama's eligibility is sandcastle waiting for the tide. It just needs the right amount of creativity to get things started.
