Steve Friedman Mr. Movie Has Passed Away
Philadelphia Radio Station

Posted on 09/21/2009 2:22:38 PM PDT by Williams

My wife just told me it was on the radio that Mr. Movie, Steve Friedman passed away, apparently from his kidney ailment.

There had been a post here when he announced he might be dying, quite a while ago. I believe he claimed to be heard in 35 states and Canada, although his show originated in Philadelphia and seemed to have very local callers.

He knew a lot about movies and he was a very very nice man. I thought folks here whould want to know.

Mr. Movie Saturdays 12am - 2am "I've seen my favorite film Forbidden Planet, the 1956 Sci-Fi version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, 178 times." Steve Friedman is Mr. Movie and he plays in Philadelphia Saturday nights on the Big Talker 1210 AM. The "Emmy" award-winning Friedman is the ultimate authority on the world of Hollywood. He’s been in love with the movies since the early 50’s and his phenomenal memory happily affords him “almost total recall? of every movie he has ever seen including the credits. Mr. Movie knows his films and listens to the ultimate critics, the moviegoers themselves. Friedman is the national film reviewer for the Donnelly Directory’s Talking Yellow Pages/I.T. Network and has starred in his own highly-rated Talk-TV Program. Go to the movies every Saturday night with Steve Friedman on The Big Talker 1210AM.

I listened to Steve for years on WCAU/WPHT, first all night and recently with the “Remember When” guys. Although I lived in Pittsburgh and now Cleveland, Mr. Movie was required listening on Saturday nights.

From NBC Philadelphia: Steve Friedman, the critic known as “Mr. Movie,” died Sunday morning after a long illness. He was 61. “Mr. Movie” was a fixture on Philly airwaves and television during his nearly 30 years on air. He even did movie segments for Channel 10 News for years and won an Emmy award. Most recently Friedman had a Saturday night movie show on the Big Talker 1210, said station spokesman Jim Murray. Friedman died from kidney failure Sunday morning after working his final show Saturday night, Murray said. He of course ended that show with his famous "hug somebody." sign off. Friedman was remembered as a movie savant who was able to answer nearly any movie question without using a computer. His wife and daughter survived Friedman. Funeral arrangements were pending as of Monday.

How sad to hear. I really enjoyed listening to him on WPHT and was amazed with his knowledge of the film industry. I seem to remember a show he did with his daughter once. Maybe she can carry on for him. Condolences to his family.

I was listening to his show this past Saturday night. I can’t believe this. I knew he was sick, but week after week, there he was on his show. I’ve listened to his show for 25 years. I’ll miss him like I’d miss a close friend.

Steve’s daughter was on the show quite frequently lately. She’s either still in high school or just started college.
