The Daily News-Miner has had its agreements and disagreements with now-former Gov. Sarah Palin at various points during her time serving the state of Alaska. We have tried to maintain respect for the office of governor and to be generally civil when discussing Mrs. Palin, her policies and the actions she took while serving as governor. The same has been true for the time since she left office.
Today I must apologize to Mrs. Palin personally and on behalf of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner for the choice of words used on the bottom of Wednesdays front page regarding her speaking engagement in Hong Kong this week to a group of global investors.
We used offensive language A broad in Asia above a small photograph of the former governor to direct readers inside the newspaper to a full story of her Hong Kong appearance.
There can be no argument that our use of the word broad is anything but offensive. To use this word to describe someone of the stature of the former governor who is also the former vice presidential nominee of the Republican Party only adds to the anger that many people appropriately feel.

The Daily News-Miner just found out what it’s like to have to eat your own BS,must have been swamped with complaints.
Yes. I suspect it was a deliberate double entendre that just happened to be grossly offensive. Sometimes the writer is so pleased with how clever it is that he or she doesn't see the flip side. But I'm only speculating.
He’s only sorry he got called on it. Boyce’s bio says he’s from southern California. Given the level of hostility exhibited towards Palin by News Miner, I’m sure he and the rest of the staff thought A Broad in Asia was a pretty funny headline, and decided against using C**t or B***h instead. Maybe Boyce and his staff will sponsor a Hang Sarah Palin in Effigy event for Halloween, as sort of a tribute to those in California who did just that last year.
I’m sure Palin will accept the apology, because that is how she is.
No matter how red the state, the press remains true blue.
bfl
you’re right — it was stale by the 1950s.
LOL!
Even Frankie went all politically correct in his Duets album, changing the lyrics to “The Lady is a Tramp”.
In Sarah’s case, the lady is a Champ!
Democrats were openling calling her a c&nt during the 2008 election. No other word would be so close as a female version of the n-word.
And yet the media just collectively laughed.
Was the editor fired? Why not?
well she was abroad in Asia so some jerky guy probably hit the spacebar for a cheap dig.
Here we go everybody. Focusing on the right hand, and not watching the left. “ A braod in Asia.” Is great word play, and hardly actionable. I heard an individual, on talk radio this morning, whine about an Obama witch doctor poster, at the DC 9/12 march. Sorry, but thats great satire. Completely relevant given the health care debate. Let’s not whine about the small things. As the left often does. I like to say, “ It’s better to stand accused, than too play plantation politics.”
It is funny.. clever... the writer was being silly and did not remember to check his Feminazi PC guide. For shame.
Hey, I’m somewhere between a chick and a broad. And I like it!
I guess I’m filing the minority report here, but I don’t see how calling a woman a broad should be any more offensive than, say, calling a man a dude. I don’t read that paper, but I’ll bet it has said things about Palin 100 times more offensive and never apologized. I find apologizing for this to be quite lame.
That is my take. I just returned from a trip to Alaska and only heard good things about the lady, so I imagine they took a real beating as well the should.
It got there because headline writers love to be cute. “Abroad in Asia’ becomes “A broad in Asia”, because the headline writer thinks it’s “punny”.
A friend sent me this one: “If you don’t read the newspaper you are uninformed, if you do read the newspaper you are misinformed.” Mark Twain
Seems the press has been unreliable for a LONG time.
Ping!
